Pretty sure you mean rubles. Sheckles are used in Israel, which is not a communist country.

Back when I had a kid who played hockey, I NEVER got to sleep in on weekends. Now that I'm older and my kids are older, sleeping until noon on the weekend is a totally regular occurrence for me. (My wife works most weekends though. She's a nurse at a hospital, so she's gone by 6:15 am the days she works.) I've always been of the opinion that a "Good Morning" is one where you don't wake up until afternoon...

(Well... actually... my youngest has moved back home now and is going to the local community college and working as a barista, so occasionally I have to get up to take her into work in the morning because she never got around to getting a driver's license because she was at a boarding school for math and science geeks and it made it really hard to get in the required driving time, then her first year of college was at a school IN Chicago where she couldn't have a car on campus anyway, so there wasn't any reason to bother... then she turned 18 and didn't have a valid permit anymore... We wouldn't want to pay for parking in downtown where she works anyway... so I guess the kids are still making me get up on the weekends sometimes... But her opening the place where she works at 10 or 11 or whatever is NOTHING compared to going to the hockey rink between 7 and 8 am for practice or a game!)

As for the maturity part, we're analyzing characters and themes here, not actual people. And the way that scene is framed among the other panels there, I think we're encouraged to judge the guy. It goes along with the title. Even though we're adults, we do X. Like the off-handed invites from person to person here in chapter 5 without thinking about the consequences at all and then just stumbling into a horrifying social situation.
It's probably a larger comment on this is what adults are actually like. I feel like we're encouraged to judge, and then it's up to us to question those assumptions. What does it mean to be responsible in these situations? For the waking up early stuff, is it an example of the guy being irresponsible or is it just part of his character? Is it bad? Does he change?

The obsession with the idea that JTE requires forcing the narration and dialogue into the mold of "natural" English (which is a subjective label varying from one country to another, and even within the same country in some cases, sometimes to drastic degrees of divergence) at the expense of any natural ambiguities and the like from the source, all in the name of localization, is something that pisses me off about a lot of translators.

But why the obsession with keeping idiosyncrasies of the source text over trying to represent the author's intent in the style of the target language and target medium (English language, English manga)? Why intentionally introduce stiff or somewhat convoluted reading experiences that the author never put in the original? Translation is one piece of the process to creating a viable text to sell in the market. Rather than coddling a reader, how you adapt/transform a text to another language is more about which reader you are writing for. Generally that's either the manga hobbyist or the mainstream Japan fan (think official subs vs official dubs).

I guess I'm just saying that the translator or even the entire technical staff (usually contingent contractors all of them) doesn't hold a monopoly on the philosophy guiding the creation of a work in a new language. It's like coding, you can solo code your own projects with full control over them, but anything created as part of a team as part of a company will not conform to one person's view of how it should be done and for whom.

I agree though, trying to force the original narration and dialogue into English won't end well. I've always seen translation as rewriting in the target language the way the author would if they were a bilingual, native speaker of the target language attempting to create the same reading experience for two different demographics in both works. Localization is just a label for that. Natural English just means natural sounding written prose which comes as an effect of rewriting in English. Personally, I always ask, what's the best way to retain artistic integrity and what's the best way to affect our reader the way the author affected theirs. Translation is and always will be interpretation of the source and transformative.

What has Shinoasa been up to lately? I think the most recent work of theirs I've seen was the art they did for the Danmaku! board game.

I kinda half-expect (and very much hope) to see Prism references because he's been punished enough.

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say the nonstop degrading and referencing of prism and the sketching scandal just doesn't happen in Japanese circles and doesn't seem to hinder Shou's work. Shou hasn't stopped publishing by any means and it seems much more likely that Shou uses a different pen name to distance themself from the very graphic, intense loli porn and sci fi epic they've been doing.

But the next book never came! Harsh.

I wonder how practical something like this is. My throat gets all fucky if I swallow with my head turned too far. I'd hate to try something like this.

While it is possible to scan just by pressing the book into a scanner, Tsubomi tends to run over 300 pages and the quality of the scans drops and warps significantly when just pressing the book into the scanner. I still keep the debinded pages in ziplock bags though. As a reminder of the horror I have committed.

As for the the hairdryer, I am what you may call "follically challenged" and have no hairdryer. Microwave has done the trick without damaging so far.

Unfortunately, I think they're different stories. Camel came out in Tsubomi 1 while Sugar was in Tsubomi 3, and all of the characters have different names.

My plan is to start with Tsubomi like in october or for that to buy them, so if you are missing some number in concrete just tell me and I'll star for that. Teamwork, you know (?)

This isn't so much an improvement as it is a... bug report?

Lately when I access an image on Dynasty via its download link, I hit a 403 screen. For instance, if I click this link (https://dynasty-scans.com/system/releases/000/024/523/Snow-White-25.jpg), I hit the screen. I can just copy and paste the link or refresh the page to access the image, but I just wanted to stop by if you guys put in some sort of link protection or something. Since it's easy enough to get around.

I feel like the reader is supposed to judge the dude pretty harshly here, unless this is normal to some degree in Japan. 36 and still sleeping in until noon? Even among me and my other single friends, this behavior died out in our early 20s. I mean, unless you really hit the club. But working a standard day job in a long term relationship? I assume a Japanese readership would find it even more odd

Seconded. It's unreal how far above and beyond Ranka's translations are from most others in the scene. Scanlation tends to lean towards mass readability for multinational audiences, which often flattens speech and voice. It's always fun when a scanlator takes on interpretation at a wider level. I mean, you don't even get that with Yen Press.
