Wonder what the implication of nicknaming her "canary" is. The only reference I can think of is the phrase "canary in the coal mine," which doesn't seem applicable. So why is she that bird over any other songbird that might be kept in a cage?

I think you can easily take this story seriously and enjoy it, it's a complex moral drama about characters in a complicated situation, presented with extremely good art and excellent writing. I'm glad the author is writing this for an audience of adults who know the characters are here to be actors in a story instead of being our self inserts, our role models, or being there to be judged or condemned by us in the audience. Even if it makes certain childish readers unhappy.

This tbh.

I enjoy this manga because it's really well crafted. The scenes of Yuni leading Fuuko by the hand (noticed it's a reversal compared to Osaka?), them holding hand over the popcorn after making furtive eye contact and then kissing, how Yuni is constantly blushing and feels so guilty, but just can't control her feelings, how Fuuko suddenly becomes so meek and vulnerable, how they both look so happy with their little interaction over popcorn flavor and drinks...

The author put a lot of thoughts into the meaning of each scenes, the movements, the eyes, the situations.

But here are people discussing how cheating is bad and Yuni deserves to be punished.

Pearls to swines I say.

I absolutely adore those kinds of details. The TV drama adaptation of the josei cooking yuri "She Loves to Cook and She Loves to Eat" is excellent for this, the actor for main character who cooks puts so much effort into communicating the character's inner thoughts with her expressions, you can track her going on a whole mental journey sometimes without a word being spoken and it's very entertaining and satisfying to watch. She's basically my new favorite actress after watching Season 2 especially.

I didn't know they had a TV drama of that series!

It's really good and there's full fansubs out there for both seasons if you look :) 100% recommend.

Japanese people seems okay with their bf/gf have s*x with other people or prostitution if it's because they want to satisfied their lust I have heard from an interview. It's weird but considering a lot of cuck content they have in media and p*rn or Light novels, Mangas, maybe thats why it's acceptable for the MC

Why the hell would you assume a character given the title "scumbag" by her Japanese author would be representative of all Japanese people. The author didn't label her "extremely normal person who represents us all".

While I agree she isn't representative, the story doesn't suggest that she's considered a scumbag because she's mostly okay with her girlfriend's job.

Oh no obviously that's not a scummy thing. It's just about her not being representative as a "normal Japanese person," and I don't think the character or the author particularly value that normalcy over being real. Accepting her girlfriend's job and not being hypocritical about it makes her a good person in my opinion but I'm aware most people aren't good like her. Her mom absolutely could not accept that sort of thing.

I don't think this manga is trashy and I'm not hate reading it. This is fine art imo. :)

That was adorable. I'm glad the author did this instead of finding some way for them to have met as kids before meeting in the manga story lol.
Also weird time compression feeling to see Eli talk about watching Amazon prime streaming before she came to Japan when she was introduced in the manga back in 2013, long before Amazon Prime streaming was even called that, and way before they were licensing and localizing anime I think. It's like a Simpsons thing where the characters don't age but time keeps flowing around them in real time, updating their pasts and presents.

Adding that sometimes people are "reading" using a machine translator and interpret things the wrong way and mislead people.

Oh yeah that's definitely something to consider too. Learned that lesson thanks to story leaks from Mihoyo games, where Chinese to English MTL of social media posts about a beta resulted in people claiming the most ridiculous shit and broadcasting it as loud as they could. The biggest example was a plot reveal about a character X being related to a character Y was instead transformed into "character X is the real character Y!!!" due to the name they had in common lol.

I'm surprised people are surprised Fuuko of all the characters has a weird idea of family roles. My bet is that she means it like unconditional love, without any actual parenting meaning, and isn't nearly as good at communication as Yuni thinks she is lol

It's spoiling story that the vast majority of people here have not yet and cannot yet read. Don't be a devil waving that temptation in front of people, it's rude to other readers and particularly rude to the scanlators, and in exchange... you get to post your hot take a bit earlier? What, was it gonna kill you to not get it off your chest? It's really not a particularly hard thing to do, waiting to talk about something until other people can also talk about it with you, and the benefits far outweigh the cost of "coming back to the thread later" lol

Does she still let other people touch her girlfriend? I couldn't handle that.

I'm extremely glad Makino doesn't have that kind of possessiveness because it would make for a really awful unpleasant story compared to what we have now and she would absolutely be the wrong partner for Mashiro. How they are now is much better :)

i was more reffering back to the general discussion around this character being "dont claim this is transgender/dont categorize this person" than you specifically

Dunno if some posts got deleted or something but I'm not seeing anyone saying anything like that here. I've certainly seen it happen plenty of times on this forum, most recently with "The Guy I Liked Wasn't A Guy At All" and people being weirdly aggro towards anyone with a trans interpretation of Mitsuki. But I've not seen anything like that for My Dear Lass.

Also if you interpret the character's physical depiction as having a more feminine silhouette (and I do at least) then it poses a question about which of these is more likely:
1) a transfem kid in China got HRT but her queer family members do not respect her gender identity, or
2) a transmasc kid in China does not yet have access to any sort of transition care but his queer family members at least respect that he's a little brother instead of a little sister.

2 seems more plausible to me. But I think we'll probably find out the answer as soon as the next chapter is out, lol.

Manga Time is supposedly a "seinen" magazine, at least according to Wikipedia, but everything I've seen from them before this series has been strictly PG lol

I agree with that take for the Kanae one specifically because she simply does not feel at all like she does at the actual start of the series, personality-wise. The way she starts the series I find it really hard to imagine classmates would be asking her for help and she'd not be anxious or particularly bothered by it. She has that whole arc of loosening up and realizing her new classmates are genuine and not looking to bully or mock her

Really hope this is "hes a trans man w/o top surgery" and not.. any other option... besides maybe they are misgendering a trans fem character and eventually they will stop doing that

I'm inclined to think Yang is transmasc due to how accepting and queer friendly Peach Town (or at least Mu Xiaoen's bubble within it) has been shown to be so far. Like they have a conversation specifically about how these gendered terms are more important socially than they are strict biological tags, right? Somebody does not need to be your AFAB biological older sibling to be a Jiejie. So surely the labels can be flexible in other ways as well, like respecting the gender of your trans little brother.

So it's okay for Mei to be fawning over multiple girls, but it's not okay for Karin to have multiple girls fawning over her?

This is really starting to aggravate me about this story. The hypocrisy that Mei is allowed to get away with just because she's main girl.

That's a good point. She doesn't want to deal with jealousy but doesn't seem to care or notice that she herself is pulling the heart strings of a whole campus.

Yeah it's almost certainly an intentional conflict that author is planning to set off, probably at this vacation.

Yeah this situation isn't really one Rei can navigate in any "successful" way, with the best course of action probably to just cut hope and seek a girlfriend who isn't currently married to a man but sleeping on her couch. If any different outcome happens it pretty much entirely has to be because Gotou made it happen.

Mina Park just doesn't recognize Haegu because she knew her as like a ten year old decades ago. Haegu doesn't remember much of anything specific of her childhood outside of trauma flashes, as is pretty common with traumatized kids.

Prunus Girl is cute for being het, although I get an impression from the author's other work they'd think it was BL instead. The progressive nature of the work is somewhat accidental lol
Edit: and of course this website appears to agree with that, tagging the manga "yaoi" and "not het". Hrmmm

Wow I really loved this. Such an angsty dramatic take on Reimari, and it even made me see Rinnisuke in a new light. It almost made me see Byakuren in a new light but she eventually revealed herself to be the self serving bitch I always knew her to be lol. I like to imagine these girls going through this together will be a huge catalyst for their relationship, and their growth as Incident Solvers. :)

I don't think this author will let a man kill Haegu. Rereading it recently it struck me just how political this comic is, after learning about South Korean feminism and patriarchy thanks to the stupid witch hunts for crypto-feminists that were making news. While Haegu personally feels guilty I don't think the author blames her for anything at all, lol. The story with Banwoo to me feels more relevant to some sort of question about the possibility of a man doing the right thing, or if he's doomed to hurt women by his nature no matter how much Minju thought he was one of the good ones.
I could also see an outcome where the prosecutor saves the day somehow? I love her and her development and want to see her get closer and closer to Haegu, so that could be my bias speaking lol.

I can't imagine an anime adaptation doing anything at all for this series, tbh. If anything a live action adaptation is far more likely, but even then the comic's structure of very brief glimpses into their lives would completely clash with a tv show format. It would basically have to be a remake of the story more than just an adaptation.

So I assume these two have been in useless lesbian with each other since elementary school? Wow.

Actually, they didn't meet until high school. And when Chie first saw Ai, believe it or not, she didn't like her because she thought she seemed like a "Yankee" (a delinquent). Or at least that's what she told herself. But Chie was still weirdly fixated on her and started to get drawn in, and when she learned Ai was actually a really nice person, became completely infatuated.

I'm pretty sure @Liliaĵa was talking about Ayano and Miyoshi ;-)

As badly as this forum tends to abuse "useless lesbian" and "idiot couple" yeah I would imagine Ai and Chie are as close as "safe" as anyone can get from that since they've been a couple since like, what, their fourth or fifth chapter together?

One of the things that's really compelling about this comic is how well the author set up the "dilemma" by making all six characters very plausibly attractive and desirable, barring random hangups an audience member might have about one or the other. Maria really IS a great character and I want to see her get the happiness she wants, but so are the other four suitors lol. They're gonna end up transforming Mei into a "monster girlfriend" like the guy from The 100 Girlfriends Who Really Really Really Really Really Love You is a "monster boyfriend" so everyone can be happy :P
