I haven't missed the reveal of what happened to her mother, did I? Except that she's a mermaid of course, although now I feel like it's more likely she drowned or something :P

I don't recall a specific reveal, no. Missing narratively, but we don't know if divorced, disappeared, or known dead.

Chapter 4 brings it up. Baby Shou asks why she doesn't have a mom, dad says she was born from his butt. Later he says "she's a mermaid, that's why we can't live together. Right after you were born, she returned to the ocean."

So my best guess would be "died in/right after childbirth", but there's room for other stuff. I also wonder about Shou's grandparents...

I just read this, and liked it. Bit of a ride, but enjoyable, and the ending is fine. The comments are almost better, though.

Why would Ruki forgive Sacchi and even Remi? Well, it was presented as Sacchi discovering (via sex with Remi) that she could like having sex with girls, and then discovering that she actually did want to be with Ruki. If the cheating hadn't happened, they might have simply broken up. So, works out for Ruki.

According to Maasa, it was wheat flour. (chapter 3) Remi was apparently hoping to lower their inhibitions by making them think they'd been drugged. Like the trope of characters acting drunk on grape juice or non-alcoholic wine.

Remi's kind of creepy but it was Asuna's rape of Meru's persecutor that really raised my eyebrows as a story element.

Poor Shou is going to disintegrate the first time Umi brings her home to a family event.

Social/sensory overload? Yeah.

Plus, big small-town family like that, with some really old members, I wonder how much homophobia would be uncovered. Not sure if the author plans to go there or not, beyond an early "gross!" from Ibu.

Not much to comment on in this one. We learn some names of Umi's siblings: Kazu the older brother, Miho and Mijiki the young twins. Umi has a big family. I'm guessing black-hair woman and her curly onee are both sisters of Umi's mom, but could be dad's too.

Dismissing Amamatsu as a "country school" was interesting.

Shou's dad continues to be... I guess calling him "shitty" might be too far, given how low bad parenting can go. Messy and somewhat neglectful, I guess? Certainly a poor personality match for his daughter, which isn't his fault, but his behavior could be better.

"Terraforming to replace Earth" is an idea that pops up (Firefly; maybe Aria) but there's tons of SF where Earth is fine but terraforming is simply part of expanding into The Space Frontier; building orbital habitats may be in addition or an alternative (for authors who think terraforming is too unrealistic.)
