Loved the story but hated the end...

Yeah, I could have done without the Chitose bit. I'd rather have the whole thing be a real story rather than have it come to essentially nothing but fantasy from the characters' point of view.

Let's just regard the ending as a joke.

The ending was definitely a joke. Chitose was buying the book we were reading. So the story was no less real than, well...the story! I thought it was super cute and I'm glad Kyouko remembered everything.
