I'm not joking. Cats can give you brain parasites that cause mental disorders and can even kill people with weakened immune systems.

If you have a housecat that doesn't run around free outside it won't be exposed to that (or rabies or a number of other diseases) in the first place. It's also primarily transmitted by cats in their feces, so as long as you wash your hands after cleaning a litter box you're probably fine.
You can also get it from undercooked meat, by the way, so perhaps you should look into vegetarianism.
