Is there any subtext on these two in the actual series? Or was it all shipping power?
In the original movies there wasn't much subtext, but they had that rivalry/opposite dynamics that just made it easy to ship. Because the ship became fairly popular I think the creators added a bit more subtext into the anime series for the fans. Even then I think the subtext in the series isn't anything too groundbreaking to skirt beyond the "just friends" line (cept that "I love you" fanservice scene in ep 10), but they're too damn cute to not ship.
