Kataiki just put out a patch for Harvest Moon DS: Sunshine Islands. As with his previous HM patches it's a 'true love edition'. Pronouns in dialogue haven't been changed and it's buggy right now but give it a few months and it'll all be ironed out. If you can't wait for girl-on-girl farmer lovin' though, you can try before then.

EDIT 2 : NVM. Ignore the instructions. It asks you to use the North American version, instead use the EU version is the one you want to use.

I am no programer, but wouldnt that require altering a lot of the system to enable it? seems like just changing the genders/pixels and few pronouns would be much more easier.

I read somewhere that they only changed a few lines in the codes(changed positive values into negative) and the content is still there...I have no idea either programing is not my forte.
