Thanks Eden0 and blueherin, I do think the author is onto something so I will give the LNs a shot.

Which is bound to fizzle out??? Apparently every young couple who faces any awkwardness is doomed now.
I like the “alien child” (whose name is Yashiro, you’d know if you payed attention to the story). You’re coming at this as if the manga has to prove something to you instead of reading it for fun. Room temperature take

I mean yeah, most young couples are doomed. Most couples period are doomed. That's not necessarily a bad thing, and it can be interesting to read about couples that might not work out.

Given this story is highly introspective and obviously trying to elevate itself above the typical surface level plots of many other mainstream romance manga, I think it's pretty obvious the author is trying to prove something. Which, good! Easy, fluffy, rote stories can be comfy, but I'd much rather read something by someone who feels they have something to prove. However, this naturally invites readers to more deeply analyze the story. Which is also good! Engage in dialogue with the stories you read!

I think the characters are very well written, but the overarching narrative and a few of the specific decisions made, at least in this adaptation (again, I haven't read the LN and fully believe it might be done better there), feel incongruous. If the narrative hadn't directly spelled out that these characters were supposed to be soulmates, I would find a relationship between these two kids trying to navigate growing up while dealing with these enormous hidden feelings more compelling. I don't (yet) buy that their personalities are a good match, that they can truly mutually support one another emotionally, that they're willing to grow for themselves as well as each other rather than just enable this codependence they seem to be developing. Like I said, maybe that growth will come. But they're kids! I wouldn't expect them to be capable of that level of relationship at that age anyway. Personally, I assume that lots of the relationships I read about in manga - especially school age manga - will end one day, but that the characters will have grown as people as a result of those relationships.

As for Yashiro, she has yet to contribute to the narrative as presented by the manga. I'm not saying you're wrong to like her, but her presence or absence in the manga would have no meaningful impact on the story or characters thus far. I hope this changes, but to me, she comes across as an unjustified gimmick.

This manga is so odd. The strange alien child adds nothing and frankly just detracts from the otherwise grounded story, meanwhile the MCs' relationship has very little chemistry and often feels actively unhealthy. It has its cute moments I guess, but to me it feels more like a story about a fairly realistic childhood relationship between two kids who are just trying to figure themselves out and which is bound to fizzle out in relatively short order, rather than about destined soulmates as the narrative claims. I haven't read the LN and maybe some character development will eventually change that impression, but it's going to take a lot to turn it around.

Or if we're headed down an anthology route of crazy side couples continually nudging the mains back on the wholesome road.

I had not considered that possibility but my gosh that would be fun

Well this will get posted eventually but I fear for this thread after doing so.

This appears to be the authors Twitter just in case anyone is curious. I can't speak for the auto translation but they appear to refer to the story as "looking like a Yuri story but isn't" and "Yuri style but not quite Yuri romantic comedy" here:

The author does appear to have done another Yuri one shot and posts mostly about Yuri. So as far as I personally feel I'm likely to treat this is a transfem Yuri myself depending on where it goes.

Yeah, I think that seals it. Either the MC is cis, in which case everyone side-eyeing this is 100% justified, or they are trans, but the author believes trans women don't actually count as yuri, which would be even worse. I guess there's the very vaguest glimmer of a chance the author pulls off a good trans story despite what they've directly said here, but I'm not holding my breath. I'll give it a couple chapters, but even putting aside the gender of it all, this first chapter was pretty weak. I'm aware that first chapters of isekais are usually pretty shit as a rule because they throw pacing out the window to skip all the setup no one cares about, but even when I was still hoping it could be a good trans story it was a rough read.

This will probably be my last comment as I don't want to make a big argument. I was really just posting my thoughts. I do want to clarify that my critique, and how I usually critique fiction, is very out of universe, non-diagetic. It doesn't really take into account how the characters feel in universe.

You are objectively correct and I'm glad you said it.

I personally can't like this kind of relationship

That's okay, plenty of us personally can't like you

Don't attack someone for an opinion...

I'm sorry for not liking people with harmful, ignorant opinions, especially when they come into a space clearly labeled for a thing they don't like just so they can espouse said opinion. I apologize to all the racists and homophobes I've disliked for their opinions.

If it wasn't riding on Still Sick's coattails, I don't think anyone would have paid this any attention, and justifiably so. Akashi seems like they can come up with interesting setups, but struggles in the execution. Perhaps I'm in the minority, but I remember thinking Still Sick fell off in the latter third or so too.

I'm actually glad they didn't end up together, but mostly because their relationship felt so vacuous. I actually had to go back and reread it to be sure I wasn't judging too harshly based on the back half, but there's just no spark whatsoever, romantic or platonic. I found myself relating far more to the characters observing their relationship from the outside, because even though I was privy to details of the relationship they weren't, it still felt creepy/weird/awkward/cringey for this adult to be hanging around with a child and inserting herself into her family life out of nowhere. The narrative just kinda mushed them together, and then all of a sudden they're codependent. That isn't to say that's inherently a bad plot device, sometimes people form unhealthy attachments with relative strangers and it could make for an interesting story to see that play out for better or worse, especially with the age difference. But instead they're both just generically decent, uninteresting people, and their problems all work out because they're so decent and uninteresting. Keep in mind, the first chapter of this story portrayed both of them as Actively Suicidal, and then it's either forgotten or handwaved away by the next chapter. And what a dumb, ultimately meaningless twist chapter 2 turned out to be - but I have to stop, this story really doesn't deserve any more of my time.

I maintain that a good editor could fix a lot of these issues, but the same could be said for most authors. In the end, it's a rare thing to be a good artist and a rare thing to be a good author. To be both is approaching the divine, especially on a deadline.

Thank you SAD, even if I found the story itself disappointing, your work is always impeccable

Always nice to see an author who knows how to show, not tell. For instance, rather than just coming out and telling us, they use the needle thing to reveal that this story takes place in a universe where tweezers dont exist. Masterfully done.

Honestly this chapter's setup feels a lot more reasonable for a misunderstanding than last chapter, I don't know if anything will beat not catching on to someone literally dry humping you in a bathroom stall.

"Wow it sure was nice of Ayaka to invite me to her wedding, but it's kinda weird that I have to wear a bride's dress too. I guess I'll finally be able to see this boyfriend she's so obsessed with though."

"Well, this could be fun, as long as the age gap isn't too- never mind."

Dynasty desperately needs a tag for stories that go beyond "age gap" to actual pedophilia. You can read what you want, but people should have a reliable way to avoid it

Will the other chapters from volume 2 be uploaded, or has the scan been dropped? Is there a raw TL anywhere if so? I have no idea where to look.

I'm with Daphie, this chapter felt really vapid, like the author is just doing a paint-by-numbers. Maybe it'll go somewhere interesting, but I just... can't bring myself to care about anything that's happening.

Re: chapter 99. Does anyone have a diagram of the various unrequited love geometry in this story? I've completely lost track of all the side characters.

Re: chapter 100. Yessss!

I made a MS paint quality one here but it was awhile ago

Okay now make one about whatever they were talking about in 101

The yuri in this manga was okay, but the online clan was definitely the high point. Glad we got a bonus chapter of them
