They jumped in immediately. No relationship build up. The initial thought bubble probably only exist just to mirror the head pat at the end.

I think the build up was the eating ass part. A great philosopher once said something like, “The quickest way to a (wo)man’s heart is through his her stomach. I can’t cook so I use the back door.”

Lol. Nene seems to be experiencing the age old question, "do I want to be her or be with her." Oof. This is some potent, high quality gay angst. But there's nothing like a pure-hearted protagonist that just wants to do good to cut through that :P.

I'm still kind of confused about the senpai's angle though. Before this chapter, I would've bet anything that she said something to Nene to cause a rift between them.
