The shipping wars are pointless, but in the case of NicoMaki it was a very popular ship with fans in Japan even before there was an anime and not much of a manga. It has continued to be popular. Some things are popular because they are popular and because the creators pay attention to what the fans want. The same applies to NozoEri. And the three subunits.

Try to imagine a TsubaHono where Tsubasa is not dominant/tachi/top. You just can't. She's just a prince. Even Maki, who is often represented as dominant in doujins - in the Love Live Movie Tsubasa was the predator and Maki was the prey. Also it's good to see Erena as a kuudere. Poor Anju has to draw it out of her.

The author did Mujaki no Rakuen about a 25-year-old NEET who suddenly woke up 10 years old and back in grade school. His adult mentality made him drool over all the 10 year old girls in his class and get in typical harem ecchi situations constantly. So I think the author does have some predilection for lolicon stuff.

This series is pretty ecchi but at least it has an interesting take.

Mio and Ritsu ACT like a couple, Yui has made it clear she WANTS her and Azunyan to BE a couple, but my theory was always that Sawako and Mugi are the only two that actually COUPLED. I think Mugi just realized being discreet was mandatory. That's why she just stares at all the subtext events without losing her (satisfied) smile. But it's all she can do to avoid saying "Yui, if you just moved those kisses a little further down Azusa's neck, you'll be pleasantly surprised ..."

It's also a gender palette swap to countless het manga.

Obviously when they married NicoMaki changed their public last name to Kurosawa. Interestingly Kurosawa (黒澤) doesn't end with same kanji as Yazawa (矢沢). But that just makes the disguise better. The whole point was not to impact Nico's idol career too much at first. It might have impaired Maki at the hospital as well.
