Shit-show: the manga.

Wow! I hated that!

Don't get me wrong, I don't think it's a bad story, not at all; I just think it's rather.... mean. Knowing the author and her track record, one should not be surprised.

Matsuno doesn't realize her attraction to the same gender until well into her 20's, nor that she has a crush on a girl that has lasted since highschool. A rather common ocurrence keeping in mind heteronormativity and just her general lack of self-awareness. The woman she fell in love with doesn't seem very keen on monogamy, and is much more fond of just fooling around.

After all those years Matsuno finally manages to figure out that she's gay and has sex with her crush, knowing fully well that the person that she was in love with had no interest in her besides that one night. Even though she passed through hardships, even giving her virginity away ( something that seems to be of great regret for her ) all she received was an empty one-night stand ( presumably.) The final statement "love is useless" sums it up pretty well; A cynical look on a rather shitty situation were nothing was gained, and everything was lost.

When it comes to the bisexual situation, I'm rather split. In one side I agree that it is shitty that this kind of stereotype is rather common in yuri ( with the only exception I can think of being 'Still Sick',) but at the same time I feel like making Yoshioka bi helps to emphasize that she doesn't care who she sleeps with, as long as she's attracted to them.

With this said: what was the moral of the story? At least for me, it just showed me that comphet's a bitch n' a half for the 111th time. I only realized that I was gay until I was 19, and I feel pretty lucky to not have had a relationship before then; I would've made a ton of mistakes that I would regret deeply nowadays. These kinds of stories help me realize how heteronormativity can destroy someone's life. That's about it, see ya.

Has the author made any other yuri works? I'm kind of intrigued by the artstyle, more knowing that it dates all the way back to 2004.

Hot garbage. The author got better over time though, so that's a positive.

This story is an insult to Native People. Homophobia is a modern religious/political disease designed to divide & conquer people. There is no reason for it to exist in ancient times or tribal cultures. Assuming the tribe in question hasn't been corrupted by missionaries, that is.

Which native people are you referring to, by any chance? Because the work doesn’t seem to indicate any particular part of the world (nor a particular time period) an tribal cultures have existed throughout most of the world at one point or another (including ones that we don’t even know about), each with its own system and ideology. It seems entirely possible to me that, out of all of these tribal and ancient cultures, at least one would have had practices or customs that we would consider homophobic.

Not to mention that this is only a story. The author simply chose a setting that seemed interesting, and could convey the story and message well. I doubt that they had any ill will or any associations to make with real life counterparts.

Wow. welp, that's Kodama for ya. I got into the habit of listening to "Hey" by Pixies everytime I read something from her, it feels kinda fitting. I liked this one to be honest, I knew what I was in for from the beginning though.

This scenario could have quickly turned horrifying.

Exactly what I was thinking; thank the god of plot convenience that magic wore off on its own.

I would have some trouble if somebody were to call me her mom whilst doing it. Thoughts like "Shit, am I THAT old??" Would completely ruin the activity for me XD

Actually, there are only 4 countries that can be labeled as communist. PRC, Cuba, Laos and Vietnam.

Late reply, but PRC is only Communist insofar as it's run by a "Communist Party". When they dismantled their universal health care and have multiple market-created billionaires running around, it's hard to call them communist or socialist in any meaningful sense. One could argue that no Communist country has actually been socialist but some faked it better than others.

Couldn't agree more. Some progress towards it has been made on countries with leftists reforms, but sadly due to constant warmongering, coups, infighting and economic blockades a truly socialist country has never existed.

This is absolutely revolting, but I agree with the comments that it is something to be expected from the author, and the tags themselves are somewhat of a warning ( not to mention the title.) I just kinda hate the double-standards of it all, the reaction of the boyfriend and the readers would be completely different if the friend was a guy.

You just answered your question. Whatever her reasons, I doubt whatever she is doing at night would be approved by the school's public morals. And yet, she's still rude and inflexible in her own enforcement of such rules: they're good for the others, but not for her. The fact she's also established to be some rich kid who doesn't even need to work just adds insult to injury, but I guess I shouldn't be surprised that in Japan, like the rest of the world, rules don't apply to rich people as they do to us, mere mortals.

Ngl, you kind of sound angrier that Reiko is supposed to be a rich kid with a bad attitude, and is using her bad attitude as a justification for shitting on her as being rich more than anything else. Is she super arrogant, yes. But is it misplaced, not exactly, she did still earn that #1 spot with all her extracurriculars going on. Her attitude needs to be toned down that’s all and needs to humble enough to recognized as confident rather than arrogant. Not to mention you make it sound as if being “the rich kid that doesn’t even have to work” she isn’t allowed to have her own problems, and we only know that “fact” through rumors so it might not even true at all or her family’s business is actually going under. I’d also like to point out when you mention about Reiko being inflexible with the rules, in that same scene we see Reiko lecturing Serina about the school rules, Serina is also being a complete dumbass and just as inflexible too because like Reiko points out if it’s so hot why is she wearing a cardigan in the first place, taking off that cardigan would do more to cool her off than raising her skirt, but she didn’t even have a good reason in the first place. For all we know Serina probably did that on purpose and those are just finding ways to always butt heads like that to get on each other’s nerves.

I mean but if you want to keep shitting on Reiko for those reasons, I can shit on Serina for being dumb and naive enough thinking she deserves #1 to resort to getting it through blackmail just because she’s in a tight situation, when Reiko who’s juggling several different kinds of priorities and extracurricular is able to earn that spot on her own. Whether or not Reiko is rich, it doesn’t mean she’s undeserving of #1 if she worked hard for it, why should she have to back down from the spot she earned because someone decides to guilt trip her or blackmail her. Both these characters are dumb, not to mention both are unlikeable to a certain extent. It’s just that people know more about Serina’s issues and finds her relatable enough so she gets the sympathy vote since we don’t know enough about Reiko or her deal yet, and from the looks of it, people don’t seem to really care to know because they’ve already up their mind about Reiko without hearing her side of the story or even knowing who she is.

Yeah, you're right. To be honest my first reaction to Reiko was "oh my god..FUCK THIS BITCH!" and it wasn't until I read your comment that I started to see things clearly. We don't know a thing about her and everything We've seen so far has been from Serina's POV, so jumping to conclusions will only sour the story before it even begins.
