It's fine to enjoy something even if you're not part of the target demographic or the group being portrayed- indeed, one of the ways global awareness about queer media and narratives spreads is via supportive allies. The LGBT movement was always based in solidarity, acceptance and inclusion, and in the hopes that those who weren't recognized or accepted by society could come together and acknowledge each other's stories. You can enjoy a lesbian story if you're straight, or a nonbinary story if you're trans, or a story about an asexual man in Russia if you're from Brazil.

The key is empathy and respect, and while certain people might certainly relate more to stories that portray their respective sexualities, that doesn't make anyone else's experience 'shallow'. Just make sure you don't end up like those weebs who read genderbender stuff for kinks and then treat actual trans folk like crap, because fetishization is pretty big issue with this genre. This also applies to a lot of authors that write genderbender, since they play the situation for jokes and end up reinforcing heteronormativity with tropes like 'turning into a girl will make you want to do guys, regardless of your original sexuality'. Thankfully, this one's a lot more wholesome, and I hope we get more content like this in the future. Enjoying something as great as this isn't shallow at all- it just means you've got good taste.

Thank you for those kind words, I sort of know those things already I think but it's always nice to check your assumptions and ideas with others. I would definitely never equate something made more for fluff/humour/kink as the "real thing". As for the heteronormative part I think you can do it in many different ways, though your example is for sure overrepresented. My own fantasy goes to liking guys instead but that's just me haha!

Joking aside I'm always a bit...conflicted (?) about genderbender like this. It's been an interest and fantasy for a long time, yet I do not really count myself as trans or anything like it really. Makes me feel like I'm stepping on peoples toes by enjoying something for a more shallow reason.

I mean it's also not too uncommon in myth and stories about magic for love to be a big factor right? Could be a comment on idols but it doesn't have to be.

I know that the whole 'fetish' thing has issues, but as somone who'd want to try the other side out I can somewhat relate: I don't know if I'd want to stay a girl and I don't know if I'd call wanting to try it out as me being transgender.

But when you have a work that, ostensibly, wants itself to be taken seriously, random out of nowhere service scenes are nothing else but a sort of bat signal for otaku to reassure them that "don't worry, this caters to you". It also gives the impression that your work is not good enough to stand on its own without appealing to such crowds.

What I'll say I feel this implies that girls can't appreciate fanservice, even in the genre concerning lesbian relationships. Pervy girls are out there too and authors like Ume-sensei or Pochi shows even the creators draw it because they like it in many cases.

The problem there is that they are inherently cis women with dicks, skewing the assumption of most trans women's ability to "pass" (Yes I know that's offensive, it's in quotes and I'm using it to make a point about perception) to toxic levels.
I'm not sure I quite get what you mean, that futa are setting unrealistic expectations for trans women and their ability to "pass"?

Personally, when I see futa sans penis I take it as it's own thing unless explicitly told otherwise, I would not put them in the same category as trains women.

The fact that they are almost exclusively represented in porn is the problem. You can't leave aside porn, because that's 99%. If there were more honest, serious attempts like the one you mentioned, yes, it could be a positive thing, but there aren't.

I mean you can do stories with futa doing normal, everyday things but then their nature as futa don't really come into play. I suppose you could make it about how they might struggle or thrive with their nature.

I mean it depends a lot on the artist like with regular manga. A good artist and writer can make super hot, steamy and even sweet lewd scenes. For myself I can rarely get off to 3D porn, it's just "too much" a lot of the time for me.
