I feel like Subtext would be a more appropriate tag since there’s nothing really explicitly romantic about their interactions

"I decided I wanted to take care of her for the rest of my life".
"If there's only one person you want to show your smile to, it's time to stop being an idol".

Yes. I also think that one of them should have shouted "SESBIAN LEX".

do you live your life seeing Yuri in real life or something? like PLEASE can we stop with this shite? you don’t scream Yaoi when you see in an Shoujo manga friendship between two guys do you??? or scream Yuri when there is friendship between females in an Shoujo manga???? or in any gener for that matter actualy! were is the Yaoi tag abd Yuri tag on EVER MANGA WITH FRIENDSHIP BETWEEN SAME SEX!!!

there are A TON of Manga out there that deosn’t use the Yuri tag and their have the same friendship , we don’t see you there trying to put the tag on it do you now?

Read this a while ago but nice to check in again.

I've been too long on this site because I can no longer tell if this is ironic or serious.

Same.

I feel like Subtext would be a more appropriate tag since there’s nothing really explicitly romantic about their interactions

It's tagged yuri officially and by a yuri author.

sure, if you wanna think that, but you REALLY know way most people here when they say ain’t yuri ain’t yuri! not whatever a small % of some mangaka or readers here feel the need to make friendship=yuri

What on earth is his deal? She's so beautiful, why would he not want her? Why would he marry her if he didn't want her? I don't see how it could be some kind of bizarre thing with how he relates to her family, because her family are nobodies. There's the dynamic where some men marry a classy woman but want to do their fooling around with trashy women, but first, usually men like that are at least polite to the woman they married, and second, while she does seem to be sort of innately classy, she's not upper class in her background . . . I don't get what's going on.

Not that I ultimately care. Forget that loser and let's see these two beautiful flowers make each other happy.

i do not see this story end on an happy ending, for one the whole ghost thing is really a dead given they won’t be able to do much but talk and pretend she doesn’t exist so that people don’t call you a nutjob for talking to an invisible person

i will have to wait untill the story ends to find out if the story has any happy ending, otherwise if i were to emotionally invest myself in an tragic ending that will hunt me T^T

also i will rather the ghost pass on and the MC find a amazing women to be with :3 unless we are getting an het ending but not with the husband??? that will be worst that having an tragic ending were the MC dies to join with the ghost, at least they will be ghost yuri XD but we will see how it goes XD

In the immortal words of the author of Otherside Picnic: "This too is yuri". The author clearly just trusts your intelligence too much to tell you outright.

(Also because sexuality would probably push Akari well over the line in how bearable her creepiness is due to, y'know, how basically nobody consents to the things she does with them.)

I get why some would say this is "not yuri" in the sense that there is no romance plot, but the story still fits the broader definition of the genre, in that it focuses on very intimate/intense relationships between women. Akari may call her obsessive behavior an expression of friendship, but only a fool would take that at face value. She is creepy, but in a pretty gay way. Yoshino is a whole fruit cake too, let's be real.

It's not exactly wrong to call it "subtext", but it's still a horror comedy about a group of girls who are probably not straight (and their non-human ghost friends). It succeeded in those terms, so I don't see the lack of a romantic conclusion as a problem here.

plus, something about the rough style of the manga brought back nostalgia of early indie mangas that I read from long ago

The drawings are not super detailed, but there is an elegance to them, and they suited these characters really well!

if your gonna say this story fits with yuri=friendship

keep it at just that! there was no gay in it, it was full on subtext galore….ah but for christ sake ofc it was” yuri” since that is just “friendship”, thank god i didn’t waste my time with another one of this “yuri” cuz at this point people got to realize you LITERALLY do not need that tag for god damn FRIENDSHIP

how come Yaoi is clear cut homosexual, or Bara for christ sake! they have 2 tags for clear cut gay between men YET “Yuri” is left for the stupid option of “they were just friends” AND “they bump clits like crazy” it’s literally a coin flip, at this point i don’t read ongoing stories unless i can already figure out the “Yuri” is actually god damn Yuri, usually the story description makes it clear but even THAT has the 50/50 chance of being a trap, just another waste of tag just to make a story about “friendship”

Kitaku goated. Maybe the only complaint is how little they experiment with their first choice couple, which is of course AyumuYu. Yu is always the horny dominant and ayumu the pure bottom maiden, which gets kinda boring with this being their 10th doujin on them more or less. However the art is god tier and super hot, just wished they experimented a little, like, most of the times we don't even get to see Yuu take off her clothes, or ayumu lust after her, so it gets kinda weird. I see a lot of drawing excellence but a lack in story, just that.

that’s the most worthless complain but VALID at the same time XD,

Why would you people read something with the BDSM tag if you are THAT against of BDSM? Just read things you enjoy and let other people enjoy this, damm.

I like bdsm which is why I think parts of this story could be made better! I mean at the end of the day, it's just some hot porn but I don't want people to think this what a healthy bdsm relationship is like

I can totally agree, but this story would have to be way longer to be able to show a healthy bdsm. If you want it, just go and read Sunstone (comic).

I agree as well. BDSM is a lot more than what you see Mira depict, lol. Safe words are important, but if you're that concerned my headcanon is that the younger girl is inexperienced and therefore isn't actually following general standard/safety procedures in an ideal scenario, and the time progression is after they've actually looked into what's healthy.

Actually, Eastern-style BDSM doesn't use safewords. And as someone who has practiced BDSM for nearly 2 decades, i find that way actually is better at weeding out the abusers that tend to be harbored by western BDSM. The idea of a safeword is starting to be used as a talisman to avoid responsibility and blame. Jay Wiseman wrote about the problem more than a decade ago, and it still hasn't been fixed.

By talisman, i mean that "did you safeword" has become the BDSM equivalent of "What were you wearing" for rape. "Oh, if you didn't enjoy it, why didn't you safeword?" Things like subspace, endorphin rushes, etc, cause an altered headspace where one CANNOT safeword. And many abusers cause it for the very reason of allowing them to do things like violate limits.

Eastern style BDSM, by nature of lacking that safeword, puts all the responsibility for safety on the dominant. They have to know their sub's triggers, body language, potential mental issues, likes and limits. There's no way of avoiding the responsibility with "oh, if i go too far, the safeword will happen." And the sub has increased responsibility for communication and telling the dominant everything.

In fact, this is a fine, loving example of eastern-style BDSM. Notice how she checks multiple times. Keeps offering outs. Keeps reassuring she can leave any time. When there's confusion, makes it blunt that it is BDSM. Only goes forward when allowed, past the initial rope panties.

holy hell that is such a garbage missinformation about safe words that i heard in my god damn life! like WTF? so how do you STOP? by fucking reading the god damn mind of the Sub? what is this garbage that you try to portray and god damn SAFE WORD that is supposed to STOP the play if something is wrong? and the worst of all you STRECHE the meaning as if it has ANYTHING TO DO WITH ABUSERS?!?!?!? and don’t even bring the idea of subspace and that the majority of people don’t just fall into it as if that is SOMETHING to REMOVE safe words!?!? how does that make NO GOD DAMN SENSE also your totally LYING that Japan doesn't not use safe words!!! i had to Look really hard for this garbage idea you presented

at the end of the god damb day! a safe word is a way to stop the play! THAT’S IT! you can decided to not use it if you wanna go that route! but YOU NEED A WAY TO GOD DAMN STOP! if some one what's to use LITERALLY the word STOP then that is literally in a nutshell what a safe word is! and you literally have no proof that they don’t use no safe word.

I said it before, and I'll say it again. Fuck Youko. You can try to fluff it up as much as you want, but at the end of the day she was two-timing, and stringing along both her partners. Of course, since it's a yuri story, the guy is easily cast aside, even though he did nothing wrong and seemed to be a faithful and caring boyfriend. Pretty shitty storytelling IMO.

I don't think so. It was pretty realistic.
A teenager whose in love with two ppl, which one of them is from the same sex, ofc she's confused and don't know what to do, especially in Japanese society.

You don’t understand—characters are either good or bad. Characters who are ambiguous, ambivalent, or who display mixtures of what appear to be good and bad traits are just bad characters in disguise.

As a rule, stories should avoid ever including bad characters. Sometimes there may be a reason for a story to include a bad character, but in that case the most important thing is that bad characters must shown to be punished, severely, or else readers will be taught that being bad is OK. Which is wrong.

And there is absolutely no excuse for any character of any age to ever be “confused”—all they have to do is read the Dynasty forums to learn exactly what they should and shouldn’t do.

i never saw some one DEFENDING cheating and brush it off like it’s nothing with the pathetic excuse of “age” and “confusion” even THO Ayu KNOWS SHE IS TWO TIMING!!! so you really shot yourself in the foot with the attempt of making an excuse for Youko being an shite person, like if Ayu know that is wrong! WAY is Youko being god damn excused when SHE KNOWS she is intentionaly hurting her for her selfish reasons? and has NO REMORSE when she is with her boyfriend!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! AND TO TOP IT OFF! how god damn MANY DAYS of CHEATING does she need to do to figure out??

man your REALLY stretching the pathetic excuse of cheating, Also how long does some one cheat for it to not fall under your excuse of her character? like one time i can excuse of being tooo young to know it in the moment, BUT AFTER? for DAYS?

idk why a lot of people on this site have such a hate on for large casts and "not making progress". why rush things?

because no one likes to chew on gum forever cuz at one point it's gonna stop having any flavor, at least that is what some people feel like, i HATE stories were there is no story progression, mostly thous are comedy manga were they can milk it for the fun of it, but in yuri i will rather it not take 50+ chapters of “comedy” without moving the romance plot

Yeah that's what I mean. Out of the two of them, Komaki is definitely crushing on Wakaba, so that scene never registered as anything but misleading. That's why I was confused by the worry.

It's less worry and more that it would be frustrating. "Girl crushes on other girl but goes out with some random guy for whatever reason" is a very unfun trope (I'll not go into the details of why, as people will interpret it differently, but I feel uncomfortable every time that trope is used). And it does affect their interactions if Komaki went out with someone in the past, considering the way she behaves towards Wakaba now hits very different if she has relationship experience.

If Wakaba's interaction was correct and Komaki dated that dude, it would be nice to know that now to interpret Komaki's actions as a change of direction, rather than learn it later and repaint all the previous chapters in a negative light. And if it was misleading, that would be nice to know to see their game as an awkward first love instead of being left in the dark.

I could be misunderstanding, but that doesn't feel like a fair standard. It almost feels like you're saying either "you shouldn't date anyone before getting together with your true love" or "any amount of experience, especially if it's with a boy, means she should ..." I don't actually know how to finish that one? Know how to properly approach Wakaba? Treat her in a specific way? How exactly would Komaki going out with a guy (or even multiple guys) before finally trying to get together with Wakaba cast their current relationship in a negative light (assuming she's not currently with some guy, which would be a completely different issue)?

Maybe she did go out with that first guy, either out of curiosity or because she was somewhat attracted to him, but then she realized that either A) She didn't like him all that much and/or B) She much prefers Wakaba. That wouldn't mean she actually has much experience with romantic relationships, let alone how to start a romantic relationship with another girl, who she already has a non-relationship with, especially with their existing dynamic.

In fact, I'd go a step further. Most people seem to view Komaki as perfect, so it wouldn't surprise me if she's gotten lots of confessions (potentially from both genders), and she may or may not have accepted some of them. However, from what we've seen, she doesn't actually like being viewed in this way—she seems to find it very alienating and, possibly, unrealistic—so any relationship based on that premise probably wouldn't feel good to her and she probably doesn't want to repeat those patterns here. Going back to what you said before, it may be that Komaki has experience in bad romances specifically.

Wakaba, by contrast, is one of the few people, if not the only one, who recognizes Komaki as a human and who wants her to be treated as such. That would be very appealing in a partner, but it also means Komaki probably doesn't know how to approach this kind of change in their relationship, especially if she still wants Wakaba to pull her down from the pedestal she's been forced on. After all, she can't just wait for Wakaba to confess to her (or accept a confession from her) out of deference to her perfection, not that Komaki would want her to.

The whole soda metaphor was so strange and pointless lol

That scene actually reminded me of my own experience with the band Dear Hoof. Originally, I started listening to them because they were kind-of weird and off-putting, but as I listened to them I developed a better understanding of the nuance and thought that goes into their songs and the way the different pieces come together, in unique ways, to form a compete picture. Now they're one of my favorite bands and I don't feel the original sense of off-putting discordance that originally attracted me to them.

With that said, I don't think that's quite what Komaki was going for here, since she admits that the mix tastes bad to her. Instead, I think she's more focused on the first part of my experience—that of visibly enjoying something that would be weird and uncomfortable for most people—except instead of doing it to make herself seem more sophisticated, she's doing it to seem less perfect. Rather than thinking she's perfect regardless of what she does, as Wakaba assumes, she actually wants people to be put-off and to see it as a flaw, so they realize she isn't perfect.

That's also where the metaphor about mixing "perfect" drinks, and Wakaba's addition about them being better in a pure form comes in. The former is saying that even if all of the individual components are "perfect" at their jobs, it doesn't mean the combined whole is without flaws, in much the same way as a person is not a an atomic existence and even if they have multiple capacities that might be described as "perfect" describing the overall mix as perfect is just kind of silly. That's not how composites or people work.

Wakaba's part, seems to be more about how society views people/things and hinting at Komaki's true motivation, rather than the one Wakaba assumes she has. Specifically, she's saying that society expects things to exist in simple, uncomplicated, and well known forms. It wants pure coke, tea, and what have you, both because that makes the world easier to understand and because it lets you avoid potentially uncomfortable experiences, like bad drink mixes. If we follow the metaphor back to Komaki, it's saying society wants her to be a "pure" idol, the "Perfect Savant" who can be neatly slotted into her space in their world view, without needlessly complicating things by making them question their own efforts or accomplishments. After all, she's "Perfect" so of course they don't compare, who could? Ignore the "normal girl" who consistently comes in close second to her, based on pure effort and determination. She is "not perfect" so her role is to fail to reach perfection, and how close she comes can also be ignored, even though coming in a close second on all of their challenges should still put her miles ahead of literally everyone else.

Actually, I don't think that last part has been touched on much in these comments. Sure, Wakaba keeps losing, but that's not for lack of trying. She comes incredibly close on all of her challenges and, if we take Komaki's performance as the benchmark for a perfect success, then consistently coming within inches of perfection in all of her endeavors still makes Wakaba an amazing person. In fact, I'd wager that someone with her record would normally be viewed as some sort of perfect and untouchable school idol, but here Komaki's presence shields her from that moniker and the isolation it brings. Maybe things would be different if one of them was a man—or if Japan was more accepting of homosexual relationships—and they could be seen as some sort of "Perfect Power Couple", but as things stand Komaki being put on a pedestal means Wakaba gets to enjoy a normal life. In many ways, Wakaba is probably leading the life Komaki wants for her self. She's a highly competent and well respected person, but she's also allowed to be a flawed human being who doesn't need to succeed at everything, on her first try and with no apparent effort.

Orrr maybe I'm just reading too much into things and overanalyzing a simple comedy manga. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I should say perfect overanalyzing then! it was a nice read :3

I would like to thank the beautiful bastard who told me to give this a shot. Even though i'm tired of Slice of school life this one is totally a cut waaaaaay above the rest. Komichi is probably one of the best characters I've seen when it comes to personality, her family is wonderful and the art is amazing. I mean, the author really loves to flex their perfect control and freedom of anatomy (and drawing butts). The convoluted poses are insane. The story is nice, the characters are interesting and, of course.... There is the very real possibility of this being true REAL yuri. Shipping Komichi and Erika like crazy.

However, i have, as I believe many of you have it as well, that nagging thought on the back of my head, that annoying anxious feeling in the pit of my belly, that calls the attention to the (unlikely) chance of this ending up as the so dreaded ultimate subtext and the story finishes displaying Komichi and Erika's relationship as nothing but platonic and ends with both of them older with their respective boyfriends/husbands and remain good friends "as they always were".... Just that... Really, really good..... "friends". Man, if this happens (as it happened before with other works as you all know), it'll be a gut punch by a prime gloveless Mike Tyson.

I know the story is proving this possibility wrong with every passing chapter, but still... I'm sure we all had past experiences of this happening before. Anyway... Great story, great art, great characters. As someone who is not into School life as much nowadays, this is a breath of fresh air into the genre for me. Glad i binged this.

sooo, after reading comments, even at this chapter 74 there is 0 yuri, and only subtext, i got to say, some people are coping really hard! but don’t worry! i will give you the award for foreshadowing the hetero ending and ask you how it feels to be punched by Gloveless Mike Tyson!

Or the author is gonna be more gently and only have Mike Tyson punch you with a gloved punch because it will end without the hetero ending but still subtext XD

OR the author will have the ugly yuri ending while everything up until that point is PURE SUBTEXT! so that will suck ass really bad too! is like watching just friendship turn 180 degree to romance in just the last chapter or something…… Definitely never happen before right guys? T^T

SOOO i will Definitely will only read this manga once it’s over, so that i know if I avoided being punched by Mike Tyson! gloveless or not!

Oh the tags have changed I wonder wh-
Oh, welp, now the premise of the story doesn't really make sense anymore.

Though, I do wonder why the emperor isn't just left ambiguously transmasc, considering they're seemingly just fine with being a guy, and don't really seem interested in being a girl.

Ok i got it, is this story pretending to be one of thous chinese stories that has “yuri” tag but also the cross-dressing tag so we get what i feel is an STRAIGHT romance story were even in the chapter 15 we got the other supposed “lesbian/bisexual” MC having SEX with HER HUSBAND, how is this YURI?!?!?!?!

I’m sorry but i don’t see anything yuri in this story, is it gonna change? will we EVER address the idea of the EMPEROR being a women? or the idea of two women in an relationship? we will EVER see the concept that no, relationship between straight people is different from gay ones? or will the MC suddenly be OK with her supposed HUSBAND being a WIFE?!?!?!?

there was one other Chinese novel that i coudn’t finish reading were the General was hiding her gender and for some stupid reason, we don’t get the other MC to know that the General was a women while the Princes was so gay she made sure the General was USED AS A PAWN WITH NO MERCY cuz he was a MEN! (abd the general fell for the princes so she did whatever the princess ask of her) that farce of an supposed “Yuri romance” HAPPEN AT THE END! 1/5 of the story with 0 romance with only the GENERAL being in love with the princes! the ROMANCE didn’t exist at all cuz the author forgot to build ANY relationship with them because the princes didn’t found out the general was a women early.

this story will need some solid exploration of the relationship they have AFTER the MC finds the emperor true gender! but i do wander if an Chinese story can pull it off were even the Japanese mangas shy away from the concept of “Sexual Orientation”

...are you okay?

Yea I’m ok? ranting about a story doesn’t make some one not ok, don’t have an medical research for that so? way asking such a question?

I haven't really liked any Usui Shio works before, and unfortunately based on this chapter, I doubt this'll be any different. In order for this kind of premise to work it kind of requires both protagonists to be somewhat unlikeable, just in different ways, one being stuck up and the other being an annoying brat, at least in my opinion. Of course character development is a thing, so maybe I'll check on it again after a few chapters, but, again, not a fan of the mangaka, so I'm not hopeful.

meee too, the only other work that was some how “nice”? even tho i will had liked them go through more introspection of what it means to be in an lesbian relationship, especially marriage!
