This is surprising to me, because I thought the conventional wisdom was that the childhood friend never wins. Offhand I can think of It’s a Detached Relationship and (the dreadful) Pages in Search of a Bookmark where that’s the case, but I know there are many others.

That fits my sense too—if there’s a childhood friend in love with the MC who’s never spoken up before and a new love interest appears for MC, the endgame odds are wildly stacked against Childhood Friend. (That’s where the, “Am I not good enough for you?” trope comes from.)

Or did you mean “winning in this series”?

I probably just read too much hentai, clearly the authors there have much better taste. It always makes me feel weird when I see the childhood friend never winning trope mentioned, since all I remember are the many stories where she gets her way. Unless it's NTR, of course. Probably helps that there usually isn't any competition in that kind of stories, though. :D

I mean, I can definitely see this ending just like this with the childhood friend winning as always, but seeing who the writer is for this series, simple and conventional doesn't quite seem their style, so a final twist in the last chapter is certainly still in the cards, no matter how unlikely.

I honestly liked how her first love didn't reject her because she was a girl like we all probably expected at first, but just because she wasn't her type. :D

Wow, the font the scanlators used did not do this justice. I think the average foreigner has better Japanese handwriting than this. I'm slightly disappointed the typesetter didn't give it their best shot in MS Paint to really capture the authenticity.

I thought the scanlators choice wasn't bad. The point of her writing isn't that it's "bad", but just really cute and doesn't fit her elegant image. So the rounded lettering in the English fits the rounded lettering in Japanese imo. Maybe could just be a little thinner.

hmm, given that the story isn't over yet I'll still hold out hope for the poly endgame, but to be fair this is also good. excited for where this will go from here.

There's certainly a small chance left for this, so all we can do is hope for the last chapter to deliver, but we'll see. Sudden backstory dropping in gave Sayo a bit of an edge here, but Rinna certainly proved the depth of her feelings as well. And Mei has already learned that there are other options available than just a regular couple. Whether she decides that this is something for her as well is another question, of course...

If Hinako's enticing blood was just the result of suicidal depression, I would think a monster would recognize that, and realize giving Hinako a reaason to live, would spoil the meal. Unless you're suggesting, Shiori's ultimate motive is actually something other than eating Hinako.

I mean, the two are most likely unrelated, but as we just learned, the monsters here don't know what changed in her to cause her to develop that tasty smell either. Shiori specifically recognizes the additional rot of the death wish, but it would be quite a stretch for her to assume the two smells are related in any way, especially if it's normal for a person with the enticing smell to have it from birth. I have no doubts that Shiori's quite genuinely exactly what she says, especially since we've had glimpses into her thoughts as well, not just relying on her words.

But now that I think about it some more... No matter whether the two are related, the mere fact that her smell is something she acquired only after the accident shows that it may also be possible for her to lose it again. Maybe a goal for Miko to work towards - if she can find out what caused this change and how to reverse it before Shiori decides to eat Hinako, Hinako would be saved and Shiori would get to eat her in a different sense.

I'm not sure if this means Hinako is enjoying being alive more now that Miko will have someone to be with after she's dead, or it means she has more reason to be ok with dying since she doesn't have to worry about Miko being alone.

Pretty sure it's the latter, and this only makes Shiori's job of making her enjoy her life harder.

Is it explained somewhere why Shiori wants Hinako to specifically be happy? Not just alive, but also happy?

Because apparently she would be more delicious to eat. Kind like the term a "happy pig/chicken is a delicious rib/chicken nugget" or something like that.
She's is kinda implied in the second chapter as why.

She explains it even more in chapter 5.

Lovely. And interestingly enough, it's quite similar to the first chapter with Kurokawa and Fujishiro.

Accidental kisses are funny and cute, but I don't consider it actual progress until they do it on purpose.

(Edit: Of course, this series being what it is, this will most likely just lead to a pattern where they add kissing to their repertoire while also wondering if the other means it romantically while they both insist it is somehow platonic.)

So true. I get being happy about the accidental kiss and the possibilities of progress it brings, but the huge cries of a variation on "they finally kissed" seem a bit premature when neither of them actually intended to do so.

Essentially all progress in their relationship has throughout been the result of comparable happenings and subsequent realizations ya know...

These two are basically going to stumble their way into a fully conscious relationship, mark my words.

We just need that realization now. Then we can truly rejoice about them knowingly kissing for the first time, with all the emotions accompanying it.

Not much left after they get this far, though. Hopefully. Once the feelings have been realized after that accidental kiss, the step to an actual romantic relationship should not be that difficult to figure out. Well, provided we won't just end up with Chiaki coming to realize her feelings for Hana now, but hiding them just like Hana has so far, in which case, yeah, let's continue stumbling. Depends on whether they decide to talk about what happened (and how they felt/feel), or just blush and run away again.
