ch 12 was kind of the Zumi chapter. I'm not sure she'd been named before then, though she'd appeared and spoken (about Shou) https://dynasty-scans.com/chapters/the_blue_star_on_that_day_ano_koro_no_aoi_hoshi_ch12#6

That's true! But, it's weird. He's definitely alleged, but even on rereading a few days ago I didn't see any evidence of his existence. In that first convo about Ma-kun, she barely participates. She's completely off-panel for Nae's next story, and then shares this odd shot with Ibu-chan to close the scene. Then, she has a really funny exchange with forehead on the trip:

Interesting spots! I'd noticed Zumi and Ibu before, though my notes had it "Zumi looking at Ibu", but now I can see it as both of them being quietly thoughtful after Nae's "engagement".

Though I'd taken "hottie / he is?" simply as Zumi not being into that guy at all.

It's way too suspicious. I'm running with some alternative conspiracy here.

But what? Completely made up, as cover? Actually a girlfriend?

Question, this page https://dynasty-scans.com/chapters/the_blue_star_on_that_day_ano_koro_no_aoi_hoshi_ch07#6

is that Nae saying "Nae doesn't belong to you"? There's like maybe a tiny word balloon tail pointing to her, but it could be some stray window art line... Nae does have a speaking-mouth there, and there's no one else to pin the line on, but it seems odd.

disinterest in romance

Zumiko is the first of the group to (allegedly) have a boyfriend, since before the story started. (How this will be reconciled with Operation: Get The Hell Out Of Here has not come up.) (I'm not sure alleged boyfriend has been given a name; I forget if we ever saw her talking to him on the phone.)

I realised I knew absolutely nothing about her...sorry, Makki. I'm sure you'll get the spotlight someday.

Yeah, she's been the least focused on of Umi's Seven. Apart from various background presence, she was in the play that Umi was kidnapped to in 13.2 (I think she was the justification for Umi being dragged off). And then she was REALLY enthusiastic about the Eisa play they saw in 17.1

...that's it. Or the only notable things in my notes, anyway.

Oh, whoops. That should've been past tense, and "dangling" isn't really the right word either - threads tend to be teased long before they come to a head. As for my examples.

Got it, thanks.

  1. There are 2 here. Zumiko recounts the fish eyes story, which is the catalyst for this really sweet scene between Shou and Umi 3 chapters later. The thread is picked up again 3 chapters later when the bullies show up and it's revealed that Zumi was one of them. I feel like it'll come back around eventually, but I'm not too confident.

Ooh! I recall speculation that Zumiko had been one of the bullies, but I don't recall anyone having spotted her before. Hard to be certain, since so many girls look similar especially in that hair color, but yeah "Here she comes" girl looks like a young Zumi. She doesn't directly taunt Shou, but is at least adjacent to the bullying.

(And the other bullies do keep similar hair styles across ages, though I think one grew a ponytail. So yeah, probably Zumi.)

Possible threads like Ibu or Nae's feelings for Umi.

I've been waiting on some concrete Ibu development for 4 years! I guess true to her desires, she's just been kind of...static? I've become so used to her, I guess I stopped expecting anything at one point.

Yeah, she doesn't do much that we see, just lurks, tending to make scenes a bit worse. :p But lurks so often, vs. it taking me forever to be sure that the 7th girl even had a name (Makki).

Hmm, your three "dangling threads" links don't seem like they're dangling to me? Shou accepted Umi (first one), I'm not sure what's dangling with Zumiko (third), and as for the aquarium club (second)... Well the senpais almost all bailed, it's Shou and the third year who has to repeat, I guess we could get into recruiting members and whether Umi would feel jealousy for Shou getting new people in her life.

Possible threads like Ibu or Nae's feelings for Umi.

I'm confused. Did we just skip to the 2nd year after speed-running into a date on the first day? Huh?

Apparently progress only happens on the first day of school? First year was first date and second year is "oh so other gay people exist".
At this rate they may kiss before finishing college...in a dozen chapters :P

I just re-read the whole work... and yeah, that seems to be exactly it. Chapters 1-9 are early in the first year of high school, then the last page of 9 and chapter 10 are the first day of second year.

wtf

This manga is soooo slow burn but soooo good. It makes me kinda sad that the artist is self-publishing since they're clearly talented enough to put out a proper serialization and make better money off it.

Per chapter, the story isn't that slow burn. Confession and reciprocation by chapter 7-8. Ecchi thoughts (skirt lift) by chapter 10. First kiss 14. By some standards it's rather brisk!

But she does around 3 chapters a year, so it's been 5.5 years, going by translations. Slow burn if you just read the updates as they come.

Umi nursing Ibu, as usual.

Nae wanting to come back to Okinawa with just Umi. I'm not saying she's bi for Umi but she ain't squelching the allegations.

I'd comment on blushes but like almost everyone is blushing, maybe it's just Okinawan heat.

Zumiko, study goddess, isn't thrilled about going back to school. I think that fits what we learned recently: she studies hard because she feels she has to, to escape, not because she's so naturally bookish.

Komatsu is friendly enough and/or bored enough to talk to Shou.

Shou gives a beautiful smile. Heck, even Umi doesn't get that smile in person most of the time.

Fuki sleep. Umi sleep. (Yeah, you need that, girl.) Nae sleep -- on Umi. I'm not saying Nae is bi for Umi, but...

Man, it'd be nice to know more about their histories. Do Nae and Umi know each other from like 1st grade, or did they bond a year ago in high school? I think the only ones we know are Ibu and Yoshi having known each other a long time, and Zumi and Shou having gone to school together before.

Thanks for the translation!

the manga is stupidity on bread, the supposed comedy is supposed to make it funny, but for me it look dumb as fuck, so no, every one is stupid and the plot won’t get any smarter but dumber by the chapter and it’s supposed to be funny!!! yeah I’m not reading this one any more, i feel like i need to kill 99.9999% of my neurons to enjoy this type of “comedy”

Is there any yuri you like

Every comment I see from you is complaining about how stupid you think stuff is

I like Mary with shorter hair, and why do noble ladies in manga always have drill-shaped hairstyles?

Looks like a hairstyle that takes a lot of work to maintain, thus showing off their noble status?

This is cute, but I feel like I’ve read this exact plotline like five times already. And there’s a big jump in Mary and Snow’s relationship between the tea incident and the ball that feels really jarring.

We skip over most of a year. Just fill in a lot more of "selflessly working the villainess"

This story is so sweet it gives me canaries more please

... Canaries? Did you mean Cavities?

Probably, but I thought of Peeps. Which are supposed to be chicks but hey, small yellow bird.

"So sweet it gives me Peeps"

If you're asking how to download a chapter, it's the little left arrow to the left of Resize.

If you're asking how to record that you read it, eh, there's a menu-looking button that pops up lists: To Read, Read, Favorite, Subscribed, and you can mark there.

Hmm. Mostly I haven't felt incipient drama, just bumbling teen fluff. A few things do worry, though. Most obvious is the "moderate luck" fortune that Umi drew. Not that I believe in fortune-telling but the author seemed to be putting her thumb on things there. Umi seems very lucky so far, so what's the downside...?

I can also imagine some problems. Umi seems to be Shou's first friend, ever, as well as first girlfriend. Um has been lusting after Shou more, but Shou needs Umi emotionally more than the reverse. That could go some bad places; maybe the "don't tell your friend" is shuffling toward that.

And while I've liked to imagine Nae as a latent bisexual who happens to have arranged her own perfect marriage, there's no real evidence of that; maybe she would turn out to be homophobic and Umi be pulled between best friend/friend group and girlfriend.

Yeah, re-read or bookmark my notes. :p

I wonder about Shou's reluctance too, but don't think we know enough to really guess. Fear of homophobia, fear of standing out, some idea of wanting to keep Umi to herself (doesn't really make sense but feels plausible in a hazy way), fear of the school separating them... maybe having a more negative impression of Nae given the latter "coming on" to her the first sleepover night. :)

There's also the shoujo romance bubbles in the "only one person" panels. The forehead bonk is really close, and then we end on a beautiful moon.

Also feels "probably yuri" given the similarity to https://dynasty-scans.com/chapters/what_i_want_to_do_now_that_im_no_longer_an_idol even if it's technically a different couple.

Just found this. Hot.

Now to reply to 10 year old comments:

Has anyone ever peeled tape off their skin? That shit has got to hurt.

They make medical/skin tape for that.

Now it begs the question: could this really work in real life.

It could, yes. Making strong associations with things is a common mnemonic practice in general, and making associations with places is the venerable method of loci. It wouldn't be guaranteed to work on a single pass, without rehearsal, but I don't think it's that implausible.
