Here we actually have a honest portrayal of the emotional mess you can end up, just because you weren't picked from a large group of people to run in the rat wheel. That's something that can definitely be appreciated.
Yeah, that's not a Japan thing. A long job search in the US is just as demoralizing, I can say from personal and observational experience. (Both on the "just out of college" end and the "older and with resume gaps" end.)
Here's a real world version of a Japanese worker who had enough of the rat race, and decided to move to live at abandoned country-side school that is located in a rather mountainous part of Japan, and is also hosting a little cafe for anyone traveling in the area:
Lol, that description makes me think of Yokohama Shopping Trip /YKK. (Which notes that it is easier to do when you're a low maintenance robot living on electricity.)
But, the robots in YKK can eat food, drink coffee, and apparently go to the bathroom. They're also 99.99% Lesbians.
