It's not that the sepia filter sets this manga apart from others necessarily, it's that that's how it's always been, for us reading the manga on this site. A sudden change like that is going to feel jarring, no matter how many different manga use the filter.

Readers don't really give a shit about this or that technical trick or original meanings or correct artistic experience, they care about their reading experience. A good scanlator always asks "how does this text choice or change or sound effect placement affect the reader?"

Abandoned seems to fit what Nene feels. She nearly starved to death in some apartment when her owner disappeared, she's only been sentient for a year, and she learned her past in a dream the day of this chapter.

What about that panel where mahoro says she's a place Nene can come back to, though? Now that's what this chapter is all about

Not translating that "fart" sfx was a bad idea and ruined it.

Would've been tricky since it's apparently the same sound as the pop rifles.

There are many, many fart sound effects in English though, and the sound is revealed on the following page to not be a rifle shot. It does kill the gag unfortunately. But also, none of the sfx are localized in this series, so that's just one of the risks of doing a silent series.

That being said, we've hit peak comedy. The only thing left is banana peels and pies in faces.

I don't understand what y'all get out of grasping at the latest clues in every chapter for why this is still the same continuity as the one shot. It gives me a feeling similar to watching a friend pick at a scab

It's not the same continuity, but it's the same concept played out over a long series. These two don't have any chemistry, lack any understanding or common ground, have opposing views on what being in a relationship means, and the whole story is based on them getting together on a whim (imagine a relationship starts in Borat when he uses the line "you like sex? I like sex. Very nice!"). Sure, they have their own hangups, but that isn't what makes them a bad match, so when they overcome them it isn't going to help the relationship. Heck, when they grow or improve, it's in spite of the relationship, like Miwa thinking it's her own fault that people are assholes because Saeko lashed out at her at the festival so she tries to get better at dealing with people.

There's a chance they'll overcome being fundamentally incompatible, but I think we're supposed to root for the breakup and their next relationships

That's completely valid. Light novels are bonkers and are a massive trip to read. They seem to run on this weird kind of anime/TV logic and are supposed to be very quick and easy to digest. This one in particular is an entirely self-published web novel, so the whole thing is going to feel even more amateurish than normal. But like, that being said, I loved the damn thing and latched onto it in a deeply emotional way, lack of talent or craft be damned. As I think a lot of readers did. I mean, pacing is terrible, plots are kind of absurd, descriptions of any kind are almost non-existent, but the stakes are always high and the yuri is off the charts!

Being real, After Hours is amazing and a delight the whole way through. Worth a read or two. More than anything, it's fun. The whole thing is about having fun and coming to grips with what that means as you get older and have to balance that with reality. It comes together so well with good pacing to boot.
