I was worried that this was heading in a cliche drag-out-the-confession-aaaaagnst direction, but after this chapter, it seems like it might actually be doing something different. But they're probably going to drag things out still to build the relationship up more.

could this be a sign of some actual progress in volume 4? could I be so ambitious as to expect a kiss?

I'm not expecting any kisses, but some relationship developments. For certain "couples" who have yet to develop any feelings for each other, there will probably be one girl from each couple (at least) starting to develop/realize they have feelings for another character.
