It's not pandering. They're just correcting what should have been done in the first place, considering the ship's popularity before the anime.
Also, S1 had some low key moments between the two such as this and this.

Compare that to how much more open they are in S1E1. They've grown much closer (and clingier) offscreen, which is a shame since we missed the development.

Why does it feel like it's ending?

Between this and Bright and Cheery Amnesia, fireworks displays are getting pretty lewd these days.

I always wondered at the fan notion that the two idol groups are separated by lots of years. In my mind, they're three years apart. Both Love Live! SIP and Love Live! Sunshine existed for a couple of years before their animes, so SIP would take place around 2011-2013 and Sunshine around 2014-2016. That doesn't negate Dia saying Muse was "legendary" since 3 years is a long time in high school years.

I had forgotten Chiharu and Izumi.

But Mizuki and Moe never did refer to themselves as "going out" but we know their relationship from their actions.

I think people were too busy complaining about the sketchy drawings to notice that Harumin's put Matsuri's head in her breasts.. That or I didn't see the commentaries about it. That's highly dangerous shipping fuel.
