I'm relieved to see that cute kouhai-chan is mature, idiot-resistant, not easily discouraged, and above all not even remotely useless. I wish her luck.

I come back to this manga maybe once every year and get into my feels every time.

Don't forget to bump the thread again when you do. I would have been completely oblivious to the existence of this gem if you hadn't. Thanks!

She looks pretty good in either one, to be honest.

...

Oh, right, I meant to ask: Why is this chapter included here when the other one featuring these two is treated as an unrelated one-shot? Seems a bit inconsistent.

In the Azumanga Daioh English localization, the English is...in English, but in a different font and with a footnote. The reason Kaoru learned German in the first place is because of the time she spent with a German foreign exchange student. Changing that part of the story and having her speak in an entirely different language when they could just put the German in a different font and/or include a note seems pretty unnecessary, but it's ultimately up to the publishers. I think it would be pretty cool for German readers if they knew she was speaking their language.

It seems I recall incorrectly. I found one page where Osaka speaks Spanish, but that's because a foreigner spoke to her... in German. Must have been some other manga with a school setting. I'll get back to you when I've re-read everything on my bookshelf; it shouldn't take more than twenty years at the outside.

I also failed to recall that Kaoru had a specific reason to know German, as opposed to (say) Swahili... Yes, probably best not to change that, in case it becomes an important plot point later on. You never know.

Are we finally gonna get more hate sex :D

Don't get your hopes up. I suspect that even if it does happen, it'll be over in three panels and we won't see any of the good parts in any case. But I'll be delighted if the author proves me wrong...

^I see you came around to my way of thinking. :)

Anyway, here's another one that latched onto the word "school". Actually, I'll quote it for posterity because it's a bit bonkers:

Now as we all need to try [spam URL] then this will be used for Top Dental Resume Samples & Pro Writing Tips, so we all are up for that. This cna be refered to them later in the coming days of research as we can refer that to them in the following weeks.

What if it's Shiori the one that will end up eaten? Isn't there a Japanese folk belief that eating mermaid flesh would grant you immortality or some other divine benefit like that?

Speaking of mermaid takoyaki, this is how I initially misread the last panel on this page:

I'll live with a smile no matter what kind of hellish seafood I have to endure.

If the premise of this story was that one of the characters was actually a space alien, I'll wager no one would have the slightest objection...

Don't tell me Minami is ruby. That'd be too much.

Minami is ruby

Hm i don't think Minami is ruby. Her color scheme is very yellow so maybe a 3rd magical girl? It'd complete the color triangle (red/pink, blue, yellow)

I assume the second line was spoken in jest, but anyway, "Minami" is "south" (though I don't know what character(s) she actually writes it with), so she doesn't fit that particular naming scheme.

Having a gang of compass-point-themed villains is still an open possibility, though.

The lack of relevance to the topic makes me suspect this is spam too, though they didn't post any links this time.

Also, why am I the only one reporting these? Looking at this page, you'd think I was the bot...

IIRC, in Azumanga Daioh the bits that were originally in English were rendered into Spanish, which felt strange to me, but probably only because French was the default foreign language when I was at school. A German publisher might well change the German into English, though to preserve the feeling of the original it should probably be something the readers would find a bit more obscure. Japanese would be weird, though.

HE DO BE A LIZARD THO

Crocs aren't lizards, tho

Ah yeah I also forgot that crocodile is not a lizard

At least it's a reptile, which makes a refreshing contrast to the simians that mostly populate this site.

My thoughts on this series:

  1. It's cute.
  2. But it's not very interesting.
  3. It's definitely yuri.
  4. But they haven't had sex.
  5. This is a long thread.

Also, I'm sure I've seen Hinako before, but I don't know where, and it's irritating me no end.

Was the title changed or was that just a dream of mine?

It was. Since there was no note about it, I'm guessing they were fixing a mistranslation.

Maybe the author changed it after realising the other girl was the flirtatious one.

It was worth reading this just for Seran's encounter with the divine.

Pastel Flamingo is real.

Ironically, she's the cool one...

I think the title should be "The Lilies Bloom in Profusion."

But it's a beautiful sight either way.

This was such a great battle chapter. Tons of action, mini-arcs resolving, characters pulling last-minute saves on their way to fight the big bads, and pockets of lesbianism approaching a singularity. I'm really liking all the characters here- Bone Saw McGraw is cute, the Tribbianis have great style, the Robot is bitch-slapping its way into my heart, the scientist unironically said Boop, the Pope is like Griffith getting eclipsed by his own demons, Dorothy is moving pieces around on a chessboard composed solely of queens, and our girl Maria is now giving out free bottom lessons to Shannon, who seems to be taking fashion hints from trashy erotic novels and somehow making them work.

Good shit.

There's a little added bonus for us Brits in the form of the real-life London locations used throughout the series. In this chapter: Piccadilly Circus, amongst others. Incidentally, this allows us to deduce that Kiki the werewolf is probably Scottish.

This series is leaning a lot deeper into the HR angle than I'd expected, which is neat, though I imagine the people who were expecting a playboy yuri-fest will be somewhat miffed. Anyway, the Pygmalion Effect is an extremely contested concept with an interesting history.

It seems like the kind of thing that would appeal to the Japanese corporate mentality, but I can't help sensing a conflict with the Peter Principle.

The summary (only on MD, for some reason) mentions that Chayama's the sole daughter of a tea plantation owner, which is why she's bullied, since the local politicians believe that the plantation's bad for the environment.

That might be a spoiler, though it's probably unimportant background detail. At least it explains where her name comes from. Or did the name come first...?
