You're right that it's generally not just anyone that can be a proofreader, but I don't think knowing Japanese is a prerequisite because proofreading isn't about fixing the accuracy of a translation. At least, I don't know any Japanese and do just fine. The proofreader's job is to make sure the dialogue/scripts/english is correct in terms of grammar, and they act as a reader stand-in to make sure the text flows well, the meaning presented is clearly, and that it sounds natural for the target language. For Japanese, this often means querying repetitive or vague text, wordy dialogue, and retained Japanese punctuation (Japanese uses punctuation differently than English, so it doesn't always carry over exactly), and offering alternatives. The idea for a proofreader is that the text was perfectly readable in Japanese to Japanese readers, so the English should be just as readable to an English-reading audience.

Her chest tattoo is “ à chaque jour suffit sa peine” which translates out to “Each day has enough trouble of its.” I assume an ‘own’ is supposed to be at the end there, but that’s all google translate gives me.

okay, so bilingual french here and i didn't know that expression so after looking it up, turns out it's a proverb meant to say that "each day brings enough trouble/pains that you don't need to worry about tomorrow's"

This was really confusing, from the strange first to third person POV shift in the beginning, to all the “X hours/minutes ago” time jumps, to all the characters and their bios dumped in at the end. Really felt messy and too jumbled.

Personally, I'm excited that this was all in chapter 1 and not spread over the first 10 to 20 chapters

It just means to love someone deeply and have a bond. Most old school yuri use it as a way to let others know they're going out. I'm not sure how it started but I think it has to do with how some girls went to schools that were religious based? If anyone knows the exact history feel free to correct me.

It'll probably be a while until I finish reading it, but Erica Friedman's book By Your Side came out today and it looks like a very comprehensive look at the entirety of yuri to date. It's packed full of previously published essays, info on decades of yuri I know almost nothing about, has a ton of yuri to add to the To Read list, even has that I'm in Love with the Villainess drama, and just generally looks like a fun read. It's also nice to see Erica's wider viewpoint when it comes to the yuri fandom at large. Very grounding.

personally, i consider typesetting (TS) to be the position that spends a few hours putting the translated script into a finished state. IMO, and a good PR will also do some QC and TL check.

Yeah, I generally have a different process for every group and different levels of copyediting or proofreading depending on the release at hand. I can't say I've ever worked with a TS who was also very schooled in grammar and native-sounding written English and could use the typesetting as an opportunity for a script review, but if the TS is also the translator it would be totally fine. If they're not the translator, that would be some serious creative control taken away from the translator, who usually has the final say on anything that isn't straight up an error and is the one who approves script changes. (very important for preventing worker alienation.) But it can definitely be hell needing to make 50+ edits post-typesetting when it takes until QC to do a proper review

I know it's standard for a PR to do TL checks, but I've found that to almost always bog down a translation review with opinions. And it compromises the the PR's role as a reader advocate by making them an artist/original script advocate instead, usually increasing stiff or bland or wordy text. However, it's always worthwhile when you have a new translator. I need to do some more scanlation, I think I'm getting withdrawals.

Sorry for getting so far off topic. To tie it all in, I guess I'd say that like sensei, sometimes I also get a little beary when I get sad. Straight up turn into a bear.

This sort of thing happened to me in a city that has pretty decent renters' rights. It's a nightmare. We had a surprise kitchen remodel due to mold, which lasted months. If the property owner/landlord has a legal reason to do the remodel/violate state renter laws, the renter is just boned unless they're wealthy enough to have an attorney fight back

Although not as well delivered as the novel, it still made me shed tears.

I think the manga really did this scene justice, much better than I figured it would. I guess the rest of the adaptation is going to be a bit more emotionally hard-hitting than I thought!

Yeaaaahhhh... supposedly there's some website web novel writers pull from with western-sounding names on it. They basically go there and pick names that sound cool or relevant, there's absolutely no bonus meaning or relation at all to the actual Appalachia. This is also why you'll see weird overlap like "Bauer" (and maybe others?) appearing as a country in Ascendance of a Bookworm. Repetitions of weirdly specific, not-quite-sensical names

And boy howdy, I feel like there might be some collective amnesia floating around. Every character, ability, and event in this story acts as a cheap plot device to crowbar the story along, be a convenient excuse to shuffle impossible to deal with characters/situations around, or add some weird drama. It's one of series' charm points. Aonoshima's adaptation does a great job of making it all feel more natural

If people didn't scanlate series that were axed... no one would scanlate anything ever! Every series ends at some point, and it's a very rare exception to the rule that the author rather than the editorial department makes that decision. You'd think that with it being the norm authors would figure out how to be prepared to cut to a satisfying ending on short notice, but if David Lynch couldn't even figure it out then I guess the rest of the world gets a pass.

Old school yuri for nostalgia's sake, I guess?
There was a time when all yuri was like this, all about closeness of the hearts... no pda, no dating as gfs, just feelings in their hearts.
We live now in a day and age with yuri about a girl going to a lesbian brothel and sampling all the hot babes is taken as normal... so I guess we have become spoiled and expect much more from our yuri than the readers in the past would have.

As one of those yuri readers from the past, let me share my take. It isn't about yuri being pure. At its core, yuri is a romance genre, and modern yuri is severely lacking in the romance department... "Oh great, another will they won't they story but this time the plot is a vehicle for the MC to go around fucking people with no interaction with the love interest? Is this really what modern readers expect from their yuri?" (And hey, I love Asumi-chan, but it's also porn and not necessarily a good defense of modern yuri. But so many of the romance serials ended and were not replaced with new romance.)

Ideally, we’d finally be getting post-confession/mid-relationship, pda, dating, intensely romantic yuri, but we aren't. And older yuri has romance in spades. You'd think that now that open romance is acceptable in yuri, we might be... getting more of it?

All right, after that scree, it's time to get back to work on more of these releases.

Considering the epilogue of the original story, I only feel bad for the possible new love interest. Unless all she does is meddle and sabotage because she's "ambitious." Even then, the teacher and the student have their story set in stone, so I'm more worried about Shiki. Well, 14-sai and Reliance are low stakes drama heavy, so it would be weird if this one didn't follow suit and went the route of the third story Game Over instead (and the hand getting caught in the door is already pretty dramatic).

After binging most of the manhua on this site recently, I'm thinking the pacing in these is just a feature of the ultra loosey goosey publishing environment. We're talking creators with less exposure to and more removal from a massive professional publishing institution, like Japanese indie/doujinshi creators, and creators (I assume*) less exposed to a history and practice of formal indie/doujinshi creation, like webtoons creators. Which is to say, less exposed to western expectations of narrative creation. It all feels like work done without editors, but many of the authors mention having editors, so that's my hot take.

*China, it turns out, produces more doujinshi overall than Japan and has a convention that surpasses attendance of comiket, but this is a relatively new feature
