Actually right now you could technically be married to a guy, and have a registered same sex relationship at the same time in Japan.

That's because when relationship registration was challenged in courts 2015(IIRC), it was judged that it was allowed to stay in effect because it did not attempt to replace or change the marriage laws that are tied to the constitution.

I kind of wish this one has a twist ending with these two raging lesbians getting together, and then they leave the poor romance-phobic girl alone... Oh well. I'm sure the author will drag out the agony since she already gave herself 3 full years to do so.

Well, lesbian girl just noticed that she's mostly fine being a mistress, even though she first tried really hard not to be. She realized that her stereotypical "bislut" sex-friend/love interest isn't someone who is suited for normal monogamous dating anyway.

So it's not a bad ending or anything. It's just her life and her coming to acceptance of what it actually is. End of her wistful thinking.

This kind of story with socially inhibited duo who like each other, but can't make a move until they get smashed is very typical.

I don't care for the stuff myself, but it's not any kind of universal bad... For some couples it was a life-line they used to take the last steps.

Sakura Trick is the extreme version. Face-slurping girls first spend years together before accepting that they love each other and move in same apartment, and then forget that girlfriends usually as supposed to have sex until they are in University and Haruka has sudden heureka moment about it in middle of a day.

Sad thing is that what happens in Sakura Trick is not as far from the truth as it should be. It's almost pure gag comedy on a surface level, and yet reality is closer to it than one might think.

Japan has staggering numbers of 20-40 year olds who have never dated and often not even had sex and who have just given up on the very idea of dating and sex in general. It's too much of hassle and hetero women also face the risk that their career is cut off if they have a child, as per social expectations. Those living with their parents as adults are even more like this, for obvious reasons like parents being around acting as a turn-off and an extra hassle to deal with if you want to bang without disturbing anyone.
