I really dislike the certainty with which you seem to suggest that Satsuki didn't use language that indicated a masculine reference in the "I like him." part, not only because once again you're taking a shot in the dark denigrating other people's work without knowing the source material, but also because in this instance there's a pretty reasonable way out of that dilemma in English: "I like Rika."

I suggested "I like Rika" to the typesetter elsewhere. For that very reason.

And while I don't have the raws, I've translated enough Japanese to know that there's no reasonable way for Satsuki to have said "I like HIM".

They may have used a gender neutral address, like こいつ/あいつ but using "him' (kare/otoko/etc) is for situations when you want to be specific about the gender (like for a boyfriend) and the author wants the reader to know they're talking about a man. And I doubt it's one of those situations.

And I don't denigrate anything, I'm just warning people that there's no indication of yaoi in the original, like a "I like him" could lead to think. Satsuki isn't struggling with gay panic.

I would have handled that differently is what I mean, because it's an important point in the story and the way people talk about Rika when he's not there is not gendered at all.

People be warned again: in Japanese, I'm pretty sure the blond guy doesn't employ any pronoun.

The translator went to great lengths to gender Rika as a "he", even in the mouth of the other characters, and it's coming back to bite them, because Japanese can do completely away with pronouns when referring to someone else. So, by using masculine pronouns, the translator changed the relationships dynamics.

Here, the guy is probably thinking that he likes Rika as a girl and that's what makes him conflicted, because it's really important for Rika to be seen as a boy by someone, so it's a form of betrayal.

When people read "I like him" in English, they read it as yaoi, when it's not the point here. Satsuki isn't gay. He's attracted to Rika as a girl.

Good intentions from the translator are misleading you.

On the other hand, Rika seems, at this point of the story, to be attracted to girls, so, in the end, this manga may end up completely Het.

OMG, such a cliffhanger! And now we have, Narita's full name, hahaha. Kei, good one.

Tbf, it was only a kanji (恵) with no indication of how it's meant to be read.

So I had the choice between "Megu/mu", "Megu/mi" (Kun reading) or "Kei", "E" (On reading).

I went for Kei, but if there's a reading later, I might change it.

Funnily enough, when this kanji is used for a girl given name, it can be read as Ai or... Aya.

Some people noted that the translation is weird.

It's not that my skills worsened, it's rather that the original was somewhat nonsensical to begin with, so I did what I could.

The author obviously isn't the best writer.

tbh, the title was rather obscure to me too.

久々に後輩に会って元気をもらったら思わず〇〇しちゃった話

I'm not sure what she's supposed to be doing. Maybe the hug.

It's a quarterly series. So you won't get updates very often.

Where is it being published? Is this GxG's/Medu's web platform? Did they get a print magazine other than Comic ExE? Is it in the latest ExE and I just missed it lol

It's only on comic medu's platform afaik.

GxG and Yodokawa herself just linked it on their twitter.

Culturally and historically, women with very pale skin have been considered a canon of beauty in Japan. And black teeth too while we're at it.

Wearing a tan is the mark of the peasants who spend their time outside.

The progress is nice and steady. Now Miyako can keep this power dynamic going for a bit longer unless her guilt gets too powerful. The next step should be to get comfortable simply being called Miyako by Oneesan. Pakee the cactus has Miyako beat.

Ruri and Hato were in sync! Every bit of their chemistry was great.

I had to look up "a friend in need is a friend indeed" but the idea seems to be that Ruri is calling Hato (and herself) a good friend for helping when Miyako (and Suga) need it, even when Hato earlier said she isn't friends with Suga and would rather stay out of it. The modern English phrase has unclear grammar and I hate it. Ruri appreciates Hato so I hope for more of this pairing!

Ruri used an equivalent Japanese idiom in the original: 持つべきものは友 which can translate literally to "what you should have is a friend"

It means that what you need when you are in trouble, is someone who gives you advice and lends you his/her strength. Which is why I used the English idiom, which is a pretty common saying.

I didn't read the raws, but what strikes me, as a translator, is the usage of "He/him/that guy" by the uncle and Satsuki.

I'm pretty sure that beside "Rika-kun", there's no language in the original referring to Rika as a guy.

It's purely something added by the translator. Neither the uncle nor Satsuki call Rika by masculine pronouns in Japanese, because they don't have to: in Japanese there's no need to use pronouns at all when referring to someone. When Satsuki says "that guy", it's probably actually "koitsu/aitsu" which is gender neutral.

I don't have anything against the characters using the right pronouns for Rika. It's just that it's something invented by the translator for the western readers.

Hey, I just wanted to ask, but will the "Ayaka is in LOVE LOVE LOVE with Hiroko -Side Story-" every be translated and uploaded here too?

There are 5 chapters of side story IIRC (short ones)

Tbh, I didn't read the original series (it's licensed) so I may lack some context. I saw there are 8 chapters on MD, I should probably read them first.

I'll eventually come to translate the side stories. It's on my TODO list.

No ETA though.

Anyone know Japanese, came across his Twitter by chance but saw this post regarding School Zone??

https://twitter.com/sukuzon/status/1579290871786184704?t=aYp29dqcEODI8VrDxDrjrw&s=19

Sounds likes a hiatus of sorts from what I gathered from the comments
-Thanks

Indefinite hiatus of School Zone, because she lost motivation.

Patiently waiting for tl...

SHES CRYINGGGG

Ok my Japanese is not the best and there are a few sentences I don't fully understand so take this with a grain of salt but I believe this is more or less what happens.

Hey. You want to take my place and translate it?

I'm losing patience with people who can't wait a few hours and spoil left and right.

I'm taking the time to redraw the SFX, so it takes a bit of time. Wait, instead of trying to be smart.

Cute, but they always mix up being introverted with being shy...

Translating 陰キャ and 陽キャ as introvert/extrovert works fine.

Could also be "Gloomy" vs "Sunny".

But it's not "shy" (in the mind of Japanese speakers anyway).

Message from the author on Twitter:

The author is also moving right now and will be absent this week. The two of them have been having a lot of fuzzy feelings lately, but I'm really glad you're still reading. Thank you for everything, I love you all a lot!!

Also, the muffled speech is because of the toast. It was in the original too.

It's a doujin, so I guess the author releases a new volume per year or something.

Sad, it's really nice.

To be exact she used the term 愛情 which can mean love/affection. It contains the kanji for romantic love and the kanji for feelings. Since she opposes it to Yuri and in the same sentence talks about struggling in her sexuality in the past, I think she means that /in that specific manga/ she doesn't want to write a yuri romance, like, say, Hana ni Harashi, but about feelings of attraction/affection between girls. Ie, the confusion of feelings of a girl who's attracted to another girl but can't put a name on it.

Which means they may not become a couple and date, but may come to acknowledge their mutual attraction. And that will be the end of the manga

I'll just quote myself. Just in case. I think it's still valid.

In the meantime we had the "5 years later" page, so they may be dating in the future.

But I think the author won't prolong the main story beyond acknowledgement of their feelings. It'd become a slice of life and she doesn't necessarily want to write that. That's not her style.

To complete the answer it's about 20 pages long and it's kind of an epilogue

An interesting take is that since it's from 2020, the disclaimer from the publisher is about people not wearing masks and practicing social distancing.

Re: the translator’s note—when was this first published?

I was sort of enjoying this, not as imaginary people in a created world, but just as a slightly off-kilter trope machine playing variations on the standard “unrequited love” scales. This latest chapter pretty much blew it for me, though—I’d have been more interested if the stuco prince had stayed the white knight he appeared to be and struggled with his own feelings in that context.

“Perfect guy who’s too good to be true turns out not to be true” is not only nasty, it’s trite.

The disclaimer at the end isn't of my own doing but was included in the volume by the Japanese publisher.

I found it appropriate to add and translate it, because I knew people would be upset about the content.

Goes to show that even for Japanese people, it was probably controversial content.

As for when, it was published, it's from 2020.

Yeah, I know, these tropes were already stale by then. But as a reminder, it got published in a purely shoujo magazine (and as far as MU can be trusted, it's the only yuri series they ever published) and in the end, it doesn't go the way people think it will. Some people are biased because they read up until chapter 9 in Spanish, but there are 13 chapters total.

As far as I know, the translator (Stan) lost interest in this one because the story "went to shit" according to him.

So it's as good as dropped.

afk (the translator of Noca) is out of order for the time being, so it's in limbo.

I may (or may not) pick it up, if time allows, because I like this kind of trainwreck and the MTL translation of that FB guy pains me. But I can't promise anything, because I already have a lot on my plate and I'm on my own.

I'm not sure why you'd eat the one becoming a zombie, wouldn't you rather become a zombie first?

Cause it's an error, i checked the french translation and somehow here they change sense for some reason (mistake ?).

In french Saori said she would let Shizuku bite her so they can be zombies together more precisely "so we can stay together" and in page 4, it's "She let me ate her with a smile".

Makes more sense. I'm not sure what I expected, given the translator's usual quality.

I checked the original too, and Windyfall's translation is accurate.

The French translator probably "fixed" the dialogue for it to make more sense, but it's really:

  • Saori says she would eat Shizuku, so they can be zombies together
  • Shizuku dreams that she had become a zombie and that Saori ate her while smiling.

"eating her" sounds odd, because it's not how you usually get zombified, but it's because you're supposed to run away from zombies. Saori would seek out Shizuku and "eat" some part of her to become a zombie (and not wait passively to be biten).

So this time, Windyfall is correct.

I stick with the one making sense.

The problem is that it changes completely the dynamics of the relationship.

It's Shizuku's dream. That Saori would let Shizuku eat her with a smile doesn't make sense.

It's Shizuku who gets eaten by Saori and "doesn't feel that bad" about it.

On a symbolic level, it says it all about their relationship.
