Is there subtext between them in the new movies? I kinda know that Rei is paired up with Shinji, but not much else.

After Rebuild 2, there is a 14 year time skip. During that time, Asuka joins WILLE which is a Fourth Impact prevention organization. She meets the previously established character, Mari, professionally for the first time since the Third Impact and it is surmised due to Asuka’s tsundere attitude and Mari’s smug sensuality, they had a love-hate relationship. They act in tandem as a team with 0.2 and 0.8 respectively and have snarky banter that you would expect from a buddy cop team.
This may be expanded upon in the final Rebuild movie 1.0+3.0
I have gone on record saying this is probably the healthiest pairing in all of Evangelion other than of course Misato x PenPen
