I guess this all goes to show that a large chunk of japan's established is still quite conservative in nature and that making money in homophobic countries like China is a lot more important to them than even their own characters and stories....

^I don't know which market they are covering their base for, but it's not China. The audience understands SuleMio are married, they see the engagement since ep1, the interactions, the "sister in law" line and the rings, they are not dumb, and the censorship agency understands too. That agency always watches the entire actual content of a show to look for anything that could be interpreted in a way they don't like and ban it, they don't care for some periphery tacked-on statement of staff or owner company. Yet the show and merchandise were and still are allowed to be on the market in China (edit: they did not have showings on television in mainland, for licensing reason, not censorship, merchandise are still sold), before and after Bandai Namco's backpedaling, so China is fine actually with the marriage that was shown implicitly.

People need to make a whole bunch of noise about this then, Bandai Namco needs to realize that nobody is actually asking for this interpretation non sense.
From what I've seen being discussed, chances are all this bullshit would be because of some old and very conservative shareholders, not foreign audiences. Unsure of how true that is, though...

From what I've seen the general Japan audience was really into congratulating Suletta and Miorine on their marriage when the show ended, and now they're pissed off about this company meddling bullshit. Also regardless of what some out of touch company suit says, the show is very clear and matter of fact about the marriage, so fuck'em.
Also with China I've seen Chinese people pissed about this nonsense as well, and Chinese artists that are very into these two.

I think the story copped out by itself even before the statement stuff, by not actually inserting proper romance in before the epilogue. Plus why is the genocide mom free and not in jail[?], but I digress.
This is exactly also the reason why doubt can be inserted, because "marriage" does not mean "romantic relationship", and story actually had more romance pushed on Suletta from male suitors than Miorine. Marriage in the story was always tied to corporate politics, so if you don't actually insert the intended romance on screen, it becomes deniable and people can say "they're just really good friends who are in marriage of convenience". It was utterly unnecessary non-sense. If two characters like each other, they get intimate with each other and make it clear with confessions and more. Relationships like that are not "up to interpretation", and any attempts at that are generally just author trying to be cute, censorship (be it self- or forced variety) or just plain bad writing. It's not a bloody mystery novel.

Never mind the fact Suletta rejected all of them
Anyway, even some artists that basically never draw Yuri (like Ban) drew SuleMio fanart, so Bandai Namco seriously was just shooting themselves in the foot (plus enabling homophobes).
