I have a feeling things are going to go a bit further than sunscreen application ;)

Akko is just happy to help out.
Diana on the other hand knows exactly what's she's doing~
Akko: sure I'll help you put on some sunscreen!
Diana: thank you. A bit lower... Lower... Looower~

Is Little Witch Academia actually yuri canon, or is it all just a little subtext and a lot of wishful thinking?

^Yes its subtext at most- but they do go from kinda enemies/rivals to really caring for each other and being close- it's more a case of where it might of gone from then on.
And the fact they became so close from starting out always butting heads, rather than how yuri it is.
Diana is super smart and amazing yet inflexible person and its great to see how she starts to come around to Akko- and when they are working together in the final climactic scenes, they seem totally natural paired up to the point where you KNEW it would be Diana not Akko's longer standing friends with her- they are both equals in a way her other friends are not.
But yeah- not really any actual yuri- but amazing to pair- in say a similar way to how Maki X Nico are.

^Yeah I'd say Diana and Akko make for a really easy ship, as there's a lot to work with as Elevown said. So I don't think it even requires a "lot of wishful thinking", more so a little bit of imagination of where their relationship could go after the series. Some wishful thinking I suppose one could say, but their relationship is great and romance to me doesn't feel impossible. Just my two cents and it's fine if people don't agree with me haha

Plus it's a Trigger anime full of homages to classic animation (the ova and manga oneshot double down on them too), which is grounds for watching right there. Personally, if I want yuri I don't really get the appeal of trying to find it in non-yuri series. But bring on the fics and doujinshi!!

^I think for me if the characters have good chemistry in the official media, like Diana and Akko do, it activates my imagination and makes the fan content even more enjoyable. Plus that's how we get a lot of works like this in the first place, interactions between characters in the media fires up artists and writers. Full on Yuri anime are somewhat rare but with the power of subtext, personal interpretation, and so fourth it's easy to in my opinion enhance the experience of various anime.
Edit: I should say not only anime but lots of other media can also be enhanced this way for me :)
