What was funny about that scene was that Tomoko seemed puzzled, more than anything, when Ucchi was sleeping / pretending to sleep on her shoulder. Ucchi made her big move on Tomoko during Tomoko's big day with Asuka. Bad timing.

No girl can quite measure up to Asuka. Too bad for Ucchi that Tomoko uses her as emotional grounding because of her simple face when she gets overwhelmed from spending too much time with Asuka. Ucchi thinks Tomoko likes looking at her when in reality she's more like white noise to her, except in human form

Yes.
Stops being cringe around ch 60-70ish (kyoto field trip arc).
I recommend reading through the cringe anyway. You'll appreciate the current stuff more because the story is about Tomoko's character growth and without it, it is just another slice of life (a good one though).

^^ It's impossible to completely understand what happens starting from ch. 69 on, Kyoto trip and beyond, without reading from ch. 20, when Tomoko has the life-changing, soul-saving experience of meeting an angelic senior, Imae Megumi, who quietly watches over and helps her.
Megumi is essential for understanding the journey toward love and open-heartedness that Tomoko begins in the series. I can't stress this enough. The conclusion of the Megumi story marks a moment of self-awareness that resonates forward for our sad mess of a heroine. If you miss the series from ch. 20 on, you in some ways miss the series.
And there's no shortage of cringe later on.

Agreed. Megumi was a turning point. Megumi showed care for Tomoko at her lowest point, and we know those small kind gestures stuck with her and convinced her to be a better person which they show she's been making an honest attempt to be.
it surprises me when people are adamant in skipping the earlier parts of the story. There's this thing called character growth and overarching themes, guys. That's why the later chapters are so satisfying, we see Tomoko grow as a person and better herself through her experiences.

True, but early cringe was on a completely nother level. You gotta admit it's so much easier to stomach now when you have a great supporting cast + a more mature Tomoko.

So how cringy is it cause I wanna read but I can't stand second-hand embarrassment. I couldn't even watch the Christmas movie Elf in class because of how cringy I thought it was.

Megumi is definitely a pivotal character in terms of Tomoko's growth as a character.
I think that's the shortest skirt I've ever seen on Tomoko!

^ Only going on an outing with Asuka could inspire Tomoko to wear that skirt.
