Still can't believe that some people think that the mystery person is a boy. I mean, with any male we've seen throughout the series, that face (especially their eyes and facial structure) definitely isn't. And once you look closer, their hair looks tied up inside the cap.
To me, they're definitely a very tomboyish and handsome girl. And I think Sunrise are just trolling around knowing that the idea of a boy having any interactions with any of the girls will flip most of the fanbase off.

Uhhhh
We've seen this eye shape before.
Cotaro exists. They have similar if not the same eye shape.
Also, that'd either have to be one small ass ponytail which men do have, or one giant cap to fit all that hair.
I still can't believe that those on the female team is so salty at the other team.
Not only that but... no bust at all, steep shoulders. Those aren't female body shapes that's for sure.

Ummmm
About Cotaro– he's a freaking toddler and we all know that people don't develop more distinctive features until puberty. All the teenaged and adult men in the series that we've seen (mostly in the background) have typical (anime) male features like chiseled jawline, short and spiky hair, thin and narrow eyes etc.
The mystery person here lack the above features. As for the lack of bust, it could easily be a case like that of Nico and Rin– flat chest. This leads me to believe that the mystery person is a tomboyish/crossdressing girl. Which are far from uncommon in anime.
I don't care whether they are ambiguous non-binary whatever, as long as their proximity to You warrants an action and especially jealousy from either or both Chika and Riko, that's all I need. I'm just not as salty as the rest of the "female team".
This could easily be Sunrise trolling/playing around the fanbase that are known to overreact over something like this. Some are salty shippers, some are allergic to any male sighting, some are afraid of their waifu getting taken. I'm just anticipating the moment in the movie, after the mystery person takes out the cap, revealing the entire thing and that everyone has been bamboozled.
Edit: After seeing the new PV, I am getting the feeling that Sunrise seems to be desperately making the mystery character's gender ambiguous. It's almost like they are hiding anything that would give away the character being a girl mostly through that jacket and cap.
Edit Edit: I may or may not be biased for the fact that I freaking LOVE anime tomboys (or ambiguous-looking girls, and that another certain term I refuse to use), and I desperately want this character to be one....

Regardless of what anyone thinks, I sure do hope that the character is actually a tomboy girl (which I've been waiting for Love Live to introduce one, I'd never forgive them if they blew this chance). And that there's actually nothing romantic is happening between her and You whatsoever. Unless out of misunderstanding from Chika and Riko's part, that'd be interesting to see (I mean, look at the artwork we're supposed to be talking about here)
Save all the romance to Mari's situation, which most people seem to ignore. And the more I think about it, I think this character's inclusion in the trailers is a way to divert most of fan's attention away from Mari's whole marriage thing (aka this movie's main plot??).

Tomboy is a personality... not a body archetype. Tomboys are girls that go against the stereotypes of what a female is seen as by females themselves.
Also.... Rin's entire character is tomboy. You's character is also tomboy... We've had tomboys for the past 8 years...
Honestly, I hope it's a male so that not only will it prove that Love Live isn't entirely yuri bait and isn't afraid to take risks with an important male character, but also because it might finally settle the dispute between the second year shippers by bringing something new to the table or eradicating the battle with a canon bombshell.
Sakura Cartelet
Dec 3, 2018 3:58PM
It's highly unlikely they'll confirm (or deny) any ship as canon as it would only likely make other shippers mad (YouChika, YoshiRiko, and ChikaRiko) are the main ones that I'm thinking about. Obviously they aren't the only ones who might be affected by whatever they decide to do (or not do) in this movie. So it's easier to just maintain the status quo and not confirm or deny any potential ships.

All this arguing going on, and the scene is probably just going to be a throw aeay where You is either just talking to a fan or just asking for directions or something. In other words, this character will just be a simple background character, and no one important, at all.

@SmolBoiYazawa (I'm sorry for making you read something this long..)
I know that, but I have broader implications with my use of the term. What I exactly meant would be understood by many as “tr*p”/”reverse tr*p”, but I’m sure people here understand why I’m reluctant to use that term. So what I want to see out of Love Live is a female character who defies gender stereotypes (in this case, by acting primarily “masculine”) in personality, in appearance and (at least in a lesser extent) gender expression. That's the kind of tomboy I am referring to, which is not too uncommon in anime. And I wish this character would be one. BUT, at the end of the day, this is just what I want to see, and that doesn’t really have to do anything with the discussion. (TL;DR I want an androgynous tomboy in LL.)
Before going further, just gonna say that I agree with Sakura Cartelet that it’s highly unlikely that any ships will be canonically confirmed/denied and to keep the status quo.
With that out of the way, here’s a hot take: I want Love Live to keep being a yuri “bait”. This in huge part because I share the same sentiment with the yuri shippers/most of the LGBT fanbase around the franchise who are TIRED of what your suggestion implies, an old heteronormative bait-and-switch that have happened several instances in the past. To you, it may seem to be a simple solution and I understand. It might solve some problems but I think it would only worsen the situation (the whole shipping mess) and Sunshine had enough backlash as it is.
We don’t need another heteronormative bait-and-switch, especially in a franchise like Love Live. A franchise that undeniably has less subtle homoromantic themes throughout its different materials, and a franchise like that is already hard to come by (the only recent example I can think of is BanG Dream!). And this novelty that Love Live possess is what makes it important to certain people, especially to fans of yuri. Which is why pulling an H. bait-and-switch this late in the Sunshine anime will rightfully upset lots of people. You may disagree with them, but I hope that you at least understand why they would be upset over this. Remember, not everyone in what is grouped as shippers are toxic. Most yuri fans find comfort in the franchise which has been very friendly and generous with its sapphic undertones. And they– we hope it stays that way.
EDIT: But I’m not all doom and gloom. And here I suggest a less problematic solution to the same problem you try to solve. I just though that WHAT IF: the character is actually You’s new girlfriend and they actually took the romance seriously. This is pretty similar to what you are saying, but instead with Love Live taking risks with an actual romantic lesbian relationship. Finally settling the dispute between the second years shippers by bringing something new to the table: an actual lesbian relationship that isn’t pandering or bait.
This would prove that Love Live isn’t entirely yuri “bait”. It doesn’t have to be a man, and I think more people would agree that a female would be favorable and just as effective, if not more. I think more people here would rather see a lesbian relationship done right rather than another typical het.
Although I am impartial towards this and that it’s much less likely to actually happen than the character simply being an androgynous tomboy but without the romance (which is what I support more). Nonetheless, I am more open to this possibility and think that it would result in fewer cons than your suggestion.
