The bit about Remilia cutting off her toes and heels to fit into tiny shoes seems to be a reference to the early versions of Cinderella, where the stepsisters did just that in an effort to fit into the glass slipper. An act which ironically was cut from later versions to make it more of a children's story. But of course it's also a metaphor for the Strongest Monster choosing to play nice with humans and others, and to fit into the role she plays in Touhou games and doujins.
