i've been re-reading this from the beginning and honestly, the second part of chapter 5 vol 1 perfectly captures why adachi and shimamura's dynamic is so equally pure, fluffy and heartwrenching. also, to go on a bit of a tangent, something about shimamura's character in the early volumes is so captivating to me. her whole philosophy around how she lives her life and her strange mix of maturity on some things (especially as an older sibling) and childishness on others, mixed with her slightly inconsistent but prevalent sense of self awareness is very authentic and real. i personally feel that both characters are really relateable in their own ways but shimamura has always been my favourite and she's deeply interesting and unique (despite the fact that she would probably immediately object to that characterisation of herself). i know others may see it differently, but from my perspective she's the "main character" (if there is even a point in designating any one as such) and her development feels like the driving factor of the novel to me, and adachi almost feels a little bit two dimentional compared to her (not to put down adachi as a character, i love her too and her character also gets pretty deep, it's just that sometimes i honestly feel like adachi acts as a plot device to push shimamura out of her comfort zone). shimamura's character has genuinely had an impact on how i see things and approach things, which is strange and not something i can say about pretty much any other fictional character. in a sense, she acts like some sort of patron deity of mine; sometimes i look up to her and she gives me a cryptic answer to one of the thoughts that the cogs in my brain get stuck on. it's weirdly theraputic to just read through her thought processes on things. anyways, this novel may be the best work to come out of this genre.

idk what this character dynamic is called but i wish i could inject it into my veins like heroin

EDIT: ok so i'm rereading a few months later with a more clear head (my original comment was slightly manic and very drunk lol) and i still enjoy this series a lot so far but i have more thoughts about it. firstly, it's kinda melodramatic and very cliche in many aspects, to the point i almost laugh at certain moments that are meant to be "serious"; however i do appreciate that the manga playing into certain cliches is (at least partially) deliberate as a sort of homage to a lot of classic yuri works, but regardless this does unfortunately make it read as slightly more shallow than i'd like. imo the biggest strength is the character dynamic, i think adachi and shimamura really made me love angsty one-sided yuri, even if nothing will ever come close to holding a candle to the adashima light novel in that regard, in my personal opinion. i can appreciate moko's whole complex about her coming off as emotionless/"doll-like" and being afraid of hurting others due to that, but again, some parts are a bit too melodramatic and come off as unserious when i think the author could've handled some of the drama with a bit more subtlety and consideration. on the other hand i think my standards for manga as a medium have been skewed by how much subtle introspection and character development is possible via internal monologue in a novel, such as the aforementioned adashima, and therefore maybe i'm being hypercritical for no reason, especially when i'm undeniably enjoying the humour and lighthearted aspects which are more suited to the medium. finally, ignoring everything else i just said, i must emphasise how PEAK fluffy kuudere yuri is.

yuri artists when they don't know how to add drama or complexity to the plot: "uhh childhood friend love rival for no reason"

disappointing because i really liked this dynamic in the first couple chapters. the main characters are very likeable.

this artist always creates pure, condensed, unadulterated, 100% organic yuri which heals the soul

honestly i’m not as mad about “be careful onee-san” ending so poorly and abruptly if it means the mangaka is putting all their effort into this; it’s genuinely a pretty interesting story and seems promising. still a bit disappointing what happened though. hopefully the mangaka is actually willing to finish this one properly lol

this would be a million times more enjoyable if the main character wasn’t so unlikeable. sadge

i can’t believe i took so long to pick this up but it has already become a favourite of mine! this is like, my absolute favourite yuri dynamic, the shy, desperate, clingy unpopular girl and the popular pretty girl who takes an interest in her for some reason. a bit generic but when it’s done well it’s great, and i love how this dealt with their conflicting personalities while also exemplifying their similarities. i really love the chill and introspective vibes and the frozen time felt so cozy and is also a great plot device too (and them kissing in front of everyone while time is stopped is so exiting, its adorable) the ending sequence was great too and felt like a satisfying and complete finish to everything (also seeing haruka blush like that and finally being honest with herself was so cute).

edit: a few years later and at this point i have to consider this a yuri classic, the story and character development is really well executed, it doesn't go on for too long it's the perfect length to do what it wants to do, so it's always fun to re-read every once in a while, perfect level of lightheartedness mixed into the plot while still generally not cheapening the serious aspects such as the character development. i would definitely consider putting this in a top 10 of all time list i think, it's only grown on me more over time as i really appreciate the kind of themes it deals with. if i had to give a criticism i'd say they definitely should've dealt with the creepy teacher somehow.

honestly i love narita-kun, usually the “yuri defender” male character trope is kinda annoying but i think it’s done really well here and he’s pretty respectful and nice :)

honestly i am mad at myself for putting off reading this for so long, good age gap yuri is so hard to come by and it’s my favourite thing ever. now that i’ve finished it, i wish i read i sooner. it’s so good! ai and misumi’s dynamic is absolutely adorable and it’s everything i love about age gap yuri in general. and all the characters are fun individually :) misumi is just so cute and innocent, but honestly ai is just as innocent in a lot of ways. she might be an adult but she’s just as inexperienced in their relationship which makes things so adorable!

chapter 44 is actually illegal amounts of cuteness overdose. type of shit to get you giggling, tee-hee levels of adorableness.

by far the best ongoing manga in my opinion, i love everything about it from the art to the characters to the themes and structure… i hope it continues for a while and stays consistent, can’t wait for every new chapter ^^

also i can’t get over how cuteee the MC’s hair is in pigtails in chapter 5, actually adorable. i love her

i put off reading this for like 2-3 years but i’m so happy i finally decided to pick it up. the art is incredible and i really liked the characters. to be honest i kinda found myself more invested in oga and himeko’s relationship because i loved the dynamic, so i kinda wish there was more of those two but it was really good regardless!

i like how this deals with the idea that queer women are conditioned into feeling like predators simply for liking other women which creates a lot of guilt and pain, i usually like braindead fluffy stuff but i’m excited to see how this deals with these issues further, it seems like it’s well represented so far :)
