I think the main reason for the overly sexist attitude of the father is so that when he finally takes Chiaki hunting, it is proof that he accepts Chiaki as his son.
That cover image of Chiaki strung up--pierced through the ankles--was so off-putting I almost didn't read it, but I trust Stan Miller's taste and stuck with it. Glad I did, good story, well done.
