They can be infuriating to read because the stakes never escalate or change, and thus quickly become exhausting. That has to be one of the most awkward and hamfisted delivery of the "single target yuri" trope I've ever seen.

I understand the reasoning behind the trope in manga, even if I don't agree with it. But it really only works if it goes unsaid, because all things being equal, "I never noticed that my crush happened to be the same sex as me" is something that no teenager has ever thought ever, in the history of the entire fucking world.
