I call it the curse of Action+Yuri series. :-( Almost all manga I've read that combined those genres got axed before their time...
It feels like there's little overlap between the audiences of the two genres, so a series that tries both ends up unpopular in either...
Don't get me wrong, I do love this series a lot, but I also think it had that ongoing problem that there was no big plot going on in the action part. In romance, we had this 'I will make her fall in love with me' which is a cute trope, but it was not the main focus. And at the action part, there was never a big threat or plot coming together like I was all along waiting for some big enemy to appear, and I thought that this whole monster rising was because some evil man was trying to attack the country and start a war, or ruin the Black Knight, etc. And I know it's basic, but I was so ready for the enemy to realize Clair is important to Frost, so they get her and other typical stuff that would have made this more interesting. Because even though I love this manga a lot, I always missed the big threat (or if they actually had one coming later, maybe they should have introduced it in volume 2). I think this story needed a bigger threat than the dragon, and maybe more drama? Who knows. I just understand why people got bored with where the story went. And even if it hadn't gone axed, I can't really see where the story could have led, which is maybe a problem. But I know it was the writer's first manga, and I'm glad they at least can have an ending to the story.
Also in what regard can Sometimes not catch a break? I thought the Super Hero one had a full run? Am I mistaken or is there something else?
Well, yeah. But their next series After School Reincarnation got the chop early. Then the magical girl guest series didn't receive continuation. So this makes three unfulfilled projects in a row (even though Sometime is only the artist this time).
I call this the 3-volume curse, where stories get axed after 3 volumes. It happened so many times that I always worry when a story reaches this part. It would be fun for the writer to continue this story in a novel format, but I follow them and I see how many other things they do, so this story will probably end here. I feel really sorry for them because, reading their journey, I can tell they were passionate and had many great ideas for this world. That's why I supported them with my money, but maybe I should have just created bots to vote for this series so it goes on forever :D
Black Knight is ending next month. Sometime really can't catch a break.
Whaaaa?? ;-;
Is it not popular enough or smthn?? </3
Well, looking at the pacing in the magazine, its popularity probably dropped after volume 2. And even though I love this series, it has that problem that there is not a big arc you can get invested in, so I understand why people started to care less. I think the focus should have been more on the worldbuilding and fighting part or the romance, because it kinda ended up being either. Also, being featured in a big magazine is a blessing and a curse as well, it's easier to get axed since so many series are trying to get into it. Also, it was a big anniversary this year, and they started many new series (and probably axed older ones). I kinda knew it would happen after the latest chapter (given how characters acted and the story progressed), but still I hoped.
Right now, I'm only worried that the ending will be either rushed or really anticlimactic. I would be happier with an open ending where Frost is ready to start a real relationship with Clair and maybe rebuild the city.

I knew this would happen. Anytime I get invested in a series, it gets cancelled. And it frustrates me because the other, less interesting slice of life stories go for years....well, that's life
Claire fell for Frost pretty much at first sight, tho.
Well Frost always had that "danger" element being the scary knight, but then it's combined with Frost also being a big muscle woman with scars. I totally get Claire is what I'm saying, because damn Frost is imposing but also incredibly beautiful. Also part of what I mean is that Claire keeps pushing her luck more and more after getting to know Frost a bit better, and realizing those walls of intimidation are more bark than bite. It makes the dynamic fun within this fictional fantasy romance setting in my opinion.
I mean, who wouldn't fall for a tall woman who can easily kill me and looks like an ancient goddess? (Claire's words, not mine)
Also, after volume 2, some people said it's a little weird that she fell in love so fast, that's why I have this silly headcanon that she is gay af. In the beginning, she shows zero interest in love; she only reads romantic novels because of her sister, and she sees marriage as a business deal. But then, seeing that Frost is actually a woman, she gets gay panic, and her first idea is to confess her love, not spending a single second worrying about both of them being women. And since the story is set in a time when same sex relationship was a big no, she probably never even considered it as an option, so meeting Frost is her gay awakening (for me at least).
I also love that in this story, every strong, tall woman is controlled by a femme half their size.
I won't lie, I don't think I like this one very much. The relationship between Clarice and Frost feels at least a little abusive? In a "the author doesn't realise it" kind of way. It reminds me of beauty and the beast, if the beauty fell for the beast first and set out to fix him.
I can see the Beauty & Beast parallel but I don't think it's abusive.
I understand why someone would think it's abusive, and I'm not trying to excuse Frost's behavior, but her "abusive' moments were usually just trauma responses. And in this volume, she started to change the way she acts a lot (once she realized she could trust Claire)
For sure, she threatened her more than once, or shouted and showed anger. I'm not saying she wasn't an asshole. Still, she never actually physically harmed her or forced her to do things ( actually, she is pretty okay with Claire bossing her around, I mean, right now they are doing Claire's plan). Also, it's important to remember that she was never treated nicely in her whole life, and socially pretty underdeveloped.
And I have to point out that Claire actually lied to Frost, and still never told the truth, also she kissed her without consent, so I wouldn't say she is victim." Their relationship sure needs work, but I think they try to be better, so I wouldn't call it abusive.
I hope this series isn't ending soon! That last dialogue bubble sounded ominous.
I share this fear, too, as many story elements seem to be resolved at once in this volume (a little rushed). But if it ends with volume 3, it will be pretty unsatisfying since the main couple has barely anything going on, which should be the main focus in a romance manga. Like Frost only started to treat Clair like a decent human being in this volume and if they pull out some last minute out of nowhere romantic scene (which would be tottaly out of character) that'll be a clear sign they have to end this. Not to mention that "my family needs money and my sister will die, so i lied" plot seems to be completely forgotten even though that was the major goal in the beginning. Honestly, I'm worried it either got axed or they never thought the story could reach volume 4. Anyway, I have two months to stay positive. :)

Soooo... did they keep baby Frost's gender a secret back then? Because if not, her father must have pulled a son from somewhere in the official narrative, which makes the entire suspected cheating-debacle ... hypocritical?
I'm on the fence with this chapter too ... it really is just one big exposition and I hope not symptomic of the series getting reduced in scope.
The creators said they didn't know if vol. 3 would happen at all, so they tried to give a conclusion with the kiss, so even if the series got axed after volume 2, it's readable.
I assume they do the same and are trying to wrap up things in this volume like Frost's backstory and Dhalia's spy thing.
It's like they are making arcs with each volume, as far as I see.
I don't wanna say stupid things, but if I remember correctly, the writers said they had like a month to plan out the new volume, so I assume they only give the green light to the next volume when you are pretty much already working on it. So it makes sense to want to have a conclusion with each volume. My only problem is that this way, they can't really build a big plot with cliffhangers. I only hope that with each chapter the popularity will grow and it will reach the point when it's sure it can't get axed, so they can add the bug guns.
So solutions to endemic worldwide homophobia aside, how about those moms getting together, huh? Sounds like fun.
I was thinking the same, maybe it's my delulu but these two have potential
Merchant girl has negative feelings toward Black knight (BK) due to her grandfather dying in incident.... Yes she saw Frost kill her(Merchant think Frost is male) father and become the new Black knight(Taking the magic belt power) but that likely was due to the previous Black Knight was likely about to go berserk and probably told Frost beforehand to kill him if that happens [Which Merchant girl doesn't know about]...Sad...At least the father was not the dragon creature that attacked...I and some people are guessed and knew it would go that route [Called it].
I just hope BK (Black knight) still has a few years left before ending up dying from the curse [Magic transforming belt]...Worst case scenario BK only has a 1-2 years left before becoming critical from the curse...Best case scenario is she has about 3-5 years left before dying...This is assuming each time the owner use the belt they speed up the proceed of the curse and BK(Frost) was 18 years old when forced to kill her father.
Meaning if the previous owner was using the belt sparingly then that is a lifespan of about 10-12 years before dying from the curse...possibly maybe 8-10 years if using it almost everyday...That is a fked up magic item...Great and powerful abilities but at the cost of slowly killing the user...Wonder how they will deal with the curse and cure it...
Probably the power of love and yuri XD????The king and kingdom is really just using BK whole bloodline as a fking meat shield from monsters...
OMG thank you I was so confused about this whole lore because I'm stupid and somehow my brain refused to get it. Good thing it's not tagged as tragedy because in the last three things I have read one of them died...or even worse.
My silly little heart just keeps breaking more and more apart with every chapter
Did you really have to wait until the very last sentence to drop “actually this whole series is an AU spinoff to the author’s furry porn comic” because now I feel like I’ve been punched in the mouth at a wedding
Does explain explain why Lin Luxi really wanted to be treated like a dog tho.
EXCUSE ME WHAT????? (link pls)
