i feel like im out of lockstep with how the author views sex also lol, the longer this series goes on the weirder it gets that mai still doesn't feel it's right to sleep with her girlfriend. they've been dating for a while, they're both into eachother, what's the issue! you could hardly say they're rushing into things at this point lol.

Considering that Mai said "let's try again when you aren't drunk", I don't think Mai's main worry was about them rushing into things. Also, I think the author's main reason for writing a convenient plot device to keep Lily and Mai from having sex is that a lot of the manga's humor is based on contrasting Lily's literal words with how Mai's imagination responds to those words. And since Mai's imagination is heavily impacted by her lack of experience, it makes sense that for those jokes to go on the author needs to keep finding reasons like raisins making Lily drunk for why they can't have sex on a particular occasion.
