Your doubt is absolutely valid. Based on the few comments I've seen in other language communities, it seems like most readers honestly have no idea what the hell just happened.
Perhaps the interview the author gave after the finale holds a small clue. But of course, it's unlikely to alter how the ending feels to most readers.
It's really hard to find discussions about this work online—only the English forums have consistently had a lot of responses. So thank you for providing the English version, regardless. :D
