Anyone know how many chapters are out right now, out of curiosity?

Point worth considering: Whether or not Amano MEANT for readers to view Teko/Pikari romantically really doesn't have any bearing on the fact that a huge number of them DID. And I would say the responsibility for that always lies with the Author, not with the Audience. It's the author's job to make themselves clear and tell their story in a way that the audience can understand and accept, it's not the audience's job to smile and nod at anything and everything set before them uncritically.

I like where this is going!! and I didn't know Rin was an artist too.

Uh, she was head of the art team for the first two volumes before Kou took over. She just did environment and scenery art, not characters.

Did we ever actually see anything that she drew? For everyone else, seeing their actual creative production is a bit of a moment of truth for their characterization (when we get concrete evidence that Aoba is very good, but still not as good as Kou, etc.).

I’m sure I could be forgetting something, but although if I had thought about her job title and the references to the past for a minute I would have realized that Rin must be artist herself, when I think of the character I only think of her as being an administrator and liaison with the higher-ups at Eagle Jump.

Obviously, a careful re-read of the entire series is in order—I’ll have to notify everyone at work that I’ll be occupied for a while.

I definitely don't remember ever seeing any of Kou's art in the series, although she's definitely mentioned that she's an artist. Hopefully this new arc we seem to be starting on helps fix that!

With the new season coming, in case anyone still had even the slightest hope for subtext or yuri.

Latest chapters have Pikari and Kokoro going in a date for his birthday. Its actually fairly romantic (lots of hand holding and looking into each other's eyes) and its clear that Pikari is falling for him if she isn't in love already, despite him being like 4 years younger than her. Dotty was true to her word about supporting their love as well and was basically stalking them throughout.

I'm still very disappointing with how the yuri thing was resolved. Amano opting to go for a we're both girls so my love can't possibly romantic like it is with a girl and boy route shows the contempt for it that carries over from Aria.

Disappointing if true, but are we sure the new season will get far enough for it to matter? This sounds like it happens past volume 10, and I think season one only covered to like volume 3? Also, the anime seems to be leaning into the yuri moreso than the manga. Wasn't Pikari's confession to Teko at the end of S1 anime-original IIRC? I couldn't find it at the end of the corresponding section in the manga, and that's a pretty long, substantial scene. I don't have dialogue translated, but I watched the raws and there's a fairly romantic-looking scene with an exchange of 'daisuki's and a lot of blushing at the end of the first episode of S2 that I can't find a match for skimming through the manga either.

Let's just see what the anime does.

I kind of like how the Kou in Rin's fantasies starts off looking a bit more boyish and then shifts to look more like herself by the end as Rin stops thinking about the novel so much as just herself and Kou.

Please let Rin visit Kou soon, Tokunou...

Obviously the next project is a fully realized version of Nene Quest.

God willing

I'm sure we'll be seeing more of Kou, considering we went through the trouble of seeing her first days in France. She and Rin have to visit eachother sooner or later, at the very least.

I hope we a confession (at least) before the manga ends.

Binged this recently, really loved it. This is the Gyaru Yuri we deserve and I'm sad Citrus got animated instead of this.

In all seriousness, I don't think Catherine's a serious threat to Rin - at least not just going by this chapter. Kou's attracted to her, because -spoilers!- Kou likes women and Catherine is rather pretty, but Kou didn't get flustered until Catherine got actually touchy - and I get the impression that Catherine's only slightly more serious in her advances than Hazuki is.

Wait wait wait wait

Is that the author doing fanart? Or is that just the manga? Because that just looks like the manga.

So we have permission to ship it, then?

Don't need permission, but we do have Author's Blessing

isn't their relationship canon though?

Asking the wrong person - I've only watched the first two eps of the new anime.

I'm basically happy with what we got as far as Kou/Rin, goes. "Always stay by my side" is a pretty romantic notion even with het couples in japanese stuff, let alone low-key Yuri. I wouldn't call Kou particularly dense here - Rin basically says that she always wants to be with Kou, and Kou says that she feels the same way. It's pretty clear to me that these two grown-ass adults are going to be willing and able to make a long-distance thing work - Kou is absolutely not speaking to Rin like she's never going to see her again. And it's also feels pretty clear to me that Kou's grown to see Aoba more as a prized student than a romantic interest. She just doesn't talk to or about Aoba like she does with Rin, and leaving Aoba doesn't bring here close to tears like leaving Rin does. I could have done with them spending a bit more time on those convos, but New Game's format as a 4-koma makes that a little awkward. Really looking forward to seeing how DogaKobo adapts this!

@Codetyler1 I kind of wonder if that's the point. Like if Tokunou wants to draw them with adorable children but obviously can't work that into the story, so oh just coincidentally Yun's siblings, who we only ever see Hajime and Yun looking after, just happen to look like mini-Yun and baby-brother-Hajime

Aaaand confirmation that Momo and Naru aren't a couple (yet). They're just living together for rent.

Hey now - Hajime's the only one who said anything about rent. :P Momo just said that she came to Tokyo with Naru.

Aaaaa the latest ep was really good. Dogakobo really expanded nicely on the original material. Second season's just been a delight so far.

Reina doesn't end up with Taki, but the part of the story where you'd expect her to come to her senses and realize she's crushing on a widower she barely knows and who's 20 years her senior and that she should move on turns out being the part where Reina just doubles down on chasing him like a child. Also Kumiko barely says ANYTHING to her through this point or afterwards, instead fixating very heavily on Asuka who conveniently leaves at the end of the season before we can start expecting anything to come of THAT either.

This was all in the books and KyoAni does it's damndest to make a lot of it work, so I don't really blame them for how it turned out, but goddamn is the original text just a disaster at this point. It's a real shame, it was really really good up to that point, but Reina's arc just ends hideously terribly and it poisons everything around it. There's an off-chance that the author is playing people and the new novels/movies will fix it, but the way she's talking in interviews does NOT inspire confidence.

Unlike New Game, which is good and fundamentally respects the audience's investment in the characters.
