Also can you make it so that the filesizes are smaller for the mobile site, or have a direct link to the image, so that it doesn't crash as often.

Not entirely sure how I want to deal with this.

Part of the reasons behind the existence of our reader while so many others exist is to maintain image quality. Many other online readers resize and compress the shit out of pages into shitty JPGs. That is something we want to avoid and just serve up the image as they are released by their scanlators. This works a large majority of the time, and we have no interest in reducing those file sizes at all.

Issues do occur though when scanlators release horribly optimized images, that have pages that are multiple megabytes large. Its these chapters I want to find someway to address. Two options I have though of so far are a way to manually tell a chapter to resize the images to a certain size, or an automatic solution that if a page is over X (maybe 2000px tall or 2 megabytes) it resizes it.

I submit this!

Payapaya Scans

Looks good, its up now.

I forgot to put this in the guidelines, but could you make the font size 14px tall leaving 2px of space at the top. So that a capital letter is centered vertically in the logo.

I would like to reiterate my point about the moderators not being NEET hawkpeople and that the forums needs some way to report advertisers etc.

Why do you think it is important? I think previously all reports were just for spam, and as MrE mentioned previously we are going for other solutions to fight spam.

I just have one thing that's troubling me. You know the reading lists we made before the site got the new changes, well it's not offering the edit and delete button for them so basically, how do I delete them? I'm completely stuck +,+ sigh

Editing a list is only changing the name or making it public/private. The 3 default lists are excluded from that so that in the future more functionality could added to them. Like I am most likely add some visual indicator for when browsing chapters if one is already one of those lists.

I probably should a page to edit all the items on a list at once. That will essentially be a list of items with checkboxes next to them, and ability to remove all checked items.

I just noticed that the notification of "You already read this chapter/series" ... Would it be possible to return that feature? I mean, if I add it to "Read" list.

Currently the item in the dropdown menu has an X instead of + if its already on your list, and clicking it will remove it. It might need to be made visually distinctive if that case (red tinting maybe?).

Very, very impressive I must say. Besides the fact that I can no longer change the story page using my arrow keys,

Do you have more information about this? You should still be able to.

New reader seems good so far, though I do have one question, will you be re-adding the links to various scan groups websites as were there previously? I liked being able to check out each group's website easily from here if I enjoyed their translations particularly.

I did that earlier today, it was an oversight that they were left out.

That is supposed to convey that the last post was then instead of when the thread was started. The wording is quite awkward atm, but couldn't think of anything better.

I don't think including a subforum there would add anything but clutter. The title of a thread should already tell you what it generally is about. I'll monitor the situation as we go forward, but I really don't think our forums are active enough to need subforums.

Can you add download page links to the reader? Since were already downloading it to read it it won't be any significant burden really.

I am still deciding what to do about that. While I can see a few uses for it, it seems like a very seldom used feature. I would rather find other ways to solve what it was previously used for.

@GendoIkari That really won't improve the situation at all. There might be a very specific cases where that is preferable, but overall would drastically reduce the quality of results.

What I am thinking of doing is when you get 0 results it looks for similarly spelled terms. And if it finds one display something like "Did you mean X?"

@EFWds, That was deliberately done to make it more difficult to download a huge swath of chapters at once. It is an attempt to reduce the burden we place on our host, so we will be less likely to run into issues in the future.

Can you put the download buttons back on the Series overlook instead of in the actual chapter? I'm finding it to be very inconvenient to download things by scrolling from chapter to chapter instead of the links being next to the chapter title.

@drpepperfan

  1. That already exists on the search results page, I don't think that is needed in the navbar box and will take up too much space.

  2. Yea, I know that is one of the downsides of the search system atm. Not really sure the best way to handle it easily though.

  3. The forums aren't supposed to have structure, Only one or two actual forums were ever used with the old system, so that structure was wasted.

I didn't realize you were talking about mobile version. That something I plan to look into more soon.

I get why you might want tags on the bottom, but I think that is throwing the baby out with the bath water type of situation. On some pages I think the tag list does draw too much focus, which I am going to try to look into.

I personally strongly disliked 1/2 of the banners on the main site. On the reader I liked the center image backgrounds. But we only had a few of them, and it was an extremely difficult space for an image to fit and look good.

Can you return thumbnails to the series page?

Do you mean the browse series page (http://dynasty-scans.com/series)? That is something I am planing on doing. Atm I think of having a toggle at top switch between list view (what it is currently) and thumbnail view

Is is possible to extend the page background (White space) to encompass the page

Are you referring to the read chapter page? Most of the reason it is like is now for when you have large horizontal pages. Personally I think the design looks better this way.

and have the tags at the bottom rather than top?

I don't see the gain of moving them totally out of the way so no one would see them.

Along with the tags at the bottom can it have the select page box that is present on the old one?

I am not sure what you are talking about. The page list is almost entirely the same as before

Currently online counter is missing from the forums.

Yea, its not going to come back. I don't think it really is that useful of a feature. The new forums are made to be very lightweight

And can you have the header, body, etc span to 100% vertical and horizontal rather than just being an arbitrary distance?

I think fixed width works better for the content of the reader. There is too much empty and unused space on large resolutions on most pages.

Last thought, since you're no longer using it can I have the source from the previous reader? I really liked it and would like to have it for personal reading and CSS scripting.

This is not something we would do for a variety of reasons.

The little illustrations at the top of the reader and the banners on the main site were pretty good too, it would be nice to be able to see them again, in a gallery or somewhere.

For now we are going to stick to just customizing the logo.

Overall most of suggestion are just saying making it just like the old reader, without really saying why. If you disagree with what I said, please say why you think it would be better your way.

I think something's wrong, it keeps flipping between the two versions. Have you considered using git to control the revisions?

Sounds like a DNS issue. The new site is on a totally new server, and doesn't have a copy of the old code or PHP on it. Most likely your secondary DNS hasn't received the update entry yet.

@Thiron, that was an oversight. I never really used it that much so I totally forgot about it.

It should be back shortly, just need to find a place to put the link. Since I am not sure it is used enough to get a dedicated spot in navbar,

After the host issues for the past month we are finally fully back online with our new reader.

The old reader was definitely showing its age (especially within the backend). It served its purpose very well for the past 3 years, and vastly outgrew and succeeded our initial expectations. So I decided to take advantage of moving to a new host to rewrite the entire reader from scratch. This will give us a much better base to maintain and to add features going forward. Here are some highlights of the new features that have already implemented.

  • Improved reading lists: Ability to create custom reading lists that can be made public, so you can share with your friends.
  • Suggest tags feature: Think some item has wrong tags associated with it? You can now submit how you think it should be changed, for the moderators to easily review and implemente.
  • Improved searching: More advanced search results

The new reader isn't finished, its going to be constantly evolving and adding new features . So I would love to hear any comments, suggestions, or criticisms you have.

Uploading should be resuming shortly. We will try to catch up on everything we missed during our downtime, but please let us know if we miss anything.

fixed not being able to reply to News posts, whoops

MrE Edit: If you disagree quite strongly with a tag being there (or not being there/rejected) then by all means make a post and contest it with us or hop onto the irc and poke us down. If you'd rather just bring it to our attention, then by all means fire and forget.

that was kind'a the point... because discovering new things is more interesting then knowing where you were... well to me any way... Like I said it is a kind'a silly idea...

The feature itself isn't bad, it just changes the scope of the current feature drastically. It is something that could be implemented in the future, but it would be totally separate from the "To Read" list.

One DUMB thought.... The read / to read lists... Is there a way to have the too read be everything on the site that you have yet to read? For some people that have read almost everything to everything that would be helpful.... silly... but helpful...

I don't think that is a good idea, it totally changes the use case of the feature. Currently the "to read" list is keep track of chapters you already discovered. The proposed change would change it to discovering new chapters.

I plan to recreate almost all features the reader currently has (like recently added page you mentioned). If you don't see something, its most likely I just haven't programmed it yet or a screenshot of it wasn't take.

Dropdown lists, while they were good and I liked them initially, we just outgrew them. We have too many series, artists, etc listed for their design to still work. I plan to have the search field have a auto complete, to reduce the time when you know what you are looking for. Which was the function of the old dropdowns.
