I really like this, the bitterness level of this bittersweet is very high and then the reveal that she’s actually angling for her friend in such a fucked up way adds extra layers to it. V tasty.

I love how Komaki is all ”I know you’re straight. You’ll never love me like I want. I just want you to hate me more than anyone. I know you’ll never be mine but—“ and then as soon as wakaba says ‘I love you’ to a female friend she’s so fucked up about it that when Wakaba says a word that sounds like her name Komaki’s immediately like “I’m more than her. I can give you better than she can. Don’t look at her. Don’t talk to her. I’ll give you everything you want so you don’t need her. You’re mine. She can’t have you.”

oh this is so lovely. There's really something about watching characters progress through life stages after you've been following them for years. It's hard to compare.

I think it's just that female characters were able to exist and fight and have powers in a shounen world. That's so rare, that having them as classmate/peers/secondary characters was big for a lot of the people, which is part of why the way it treats women is so disappointing.

This was a really sweet story. It hurts a lot to go through all that, and when the things you have to do to restore a sense of control over your life or to get things you’re deprived of make it harder for you… that’s such a tough place to be.

I really like the high EQ girl. Having someone in a manga that can go to levels like that over the drama makes for a really engaging story for me, and there’s so much kindness just in the way she asks questions. At the same time, it’s clear she’s preoccupied and crushing on the MC, and acts realistically in ways that aren’t fully settled when it comes to her. I’d love to see that kind of character more, she made the story so interesting. I love seeing characters go through stuff, but more than that I love seeing stories engage deeply with those issues in a way that’s kind and emotionally true to life. Watching her cut to the core of the emotions, and to have that not really change things until later, was both interesting and believable.

I also think this is a really good way to depict yuri with younger people. It’s messy, and there’s a lot of comphet with the teacher and all, and neither of them seem to fully understand their emotions about each other, but god do they Feel Things. Together with the power dynamic with a teacher that makes the MC feel valued, I feel like it makes good use of a highschool setting in a way that’s rare.

Luxi's been into BDSM for literally the entire comic, what on earth are y'all saying lol. It's the whole reason she goes along with Tongtong's "blackmail," because she enjoyed getting bossed around by a hot girl.

well yes but i hope you'd agree there's a gap between "the characters in this manga are really three dimensional and one of Luxi's traits is being into bdsm, which is why she hooks into this yuri plot that is otherwise not bdsm related" to "our characters are going to learn together and explore what it means to be in a bdsm relationship while we depict them having kinky gay sex right on the page"

Implying a character is kinky, maybe even showing a little bit of it in an empathetic way if you're really invested in your characters, is pretty common. yuri that's an exploration of bdsm is not. It's internally consistent and good writing but the former is not nearly enough to predict the later, which is why I (and I imagine many others in this thread) are expressing pleased surprise.

this was soooo good im so invested now. God shounen and yuri go so well together. All the post-battle interactions were so so sweet.

Kurohime seems a bit too into Toudou to just be handed a new crush out of nowhere, but the latter is looking pretty darn locked in with Rin at this point.

Yeah!! I really like kurohime, i hope she has good things in store. But it was really nice to see Rin is being taken seriously as Toudou’s love interest. I wonder how they’ll handle it.

Rereading the Rin bits fr makes me grin. Like goddamn their interactions are precious

It’s SO good. Mochi has really leveraged her “writing zang things” skills and her “writing inspired yuri” skills to make something totally unique. Like. A peak romance story just arose out of an awesome playful sexy gag manga with an ensemble cast. Who would have guessed it’d genre break like that?? Mochi really can’t be contained by any boundaries. She is a pioneer.

Holy fuck this is some good action. I love the range of just having a yuri shounen action sports arc, and it was so compelling!!! Mochi is my goat.

that's certainly a lot of concepts packed into one story, I'm interested to see how this goes

the collar moment was so sexy lol. im so pleased that this manga is going in this direction. this was such a fresh and powerful depiction of kink and the impact it can have on people and relationships. I love that her whole body blushes and she turns into a mess, like when you've been holding onto a kink your whole life and it actually happens to you, thats what it feels like.

There's a certain power and verisimilitude that's hard to come by on display here. Like, an aspect of the human experience regarding kink that's hard to express in art. Normally, the art that's dealing heavily in kink is about that and centers on that, it's what the story is about. Kink will be happening or be set up from pretty much the beginning, and so even if you write kink with an eye toward realism rather than fantasy, it'll end up being about the moment of kink, or how people think about it, etc.

But this story has mostly just been about the lives of these two people and about their relationship. We got maybe little teasers from early on, but it's only really showed up in force in the past couple chapters. We got to establish what normal looks like for these characters, what they look like as conscious rational people out in the world. And so it really stands out, to see just what Luxi's desires do to her. It puts it in context as this really intense and powerful experience that acts on this body, this person we've gotten used to in normal life. It captures that feeling of like, you know somebody for a really long time, and then you have sex with them, and this is that person you know and this thing is now happening to them. You've crossed into a new realm, you're seeing a new side of things, and it has so much weight because you know that person.

Moreso for kink, I think. I can't find the words for it, but I think the text does that pretty well for me. I mean just look at what's happening to her, and to tongtong, being blindsided by a sadistic streak when she sees what she's doing to her. It's just really fucking cool.

It’s really interesting how the problems luxi describes in herself remind me of tongtong’s mom. It would be cool to see the two of them interact—but also, I’m sure tongtong is quite used to all these traits.

Ooh I’m glad I caught this one! I love the way amazaki suika does characters, they feel so believable and it’s like I’m learning something abojut people or seeing a side of the human experience whenever I read their work. Their oneshots about couples or people struggling with feelings are always so personal and private. They’re clearly a real student of life—I really appreciate that in an artist.

Needless to say, I really look forward to this! Writing about a girl learning she’s gay in kind of a tricky circumstance seems right in their wheelhouse, and so far it’s a really good read.

Honestly I think the kissing and the wrist grab and neck biting stuff was hotter than the actual sex...
