I think this is the first Mochi story I've read where the rampant incest and weird power dynamics actually seem to fit the setting; They must have had fun with this one.

As an aside, I really like the way Mochi depicts girls that are a little butchy, not just plastering a "boyish haircut" on them.

Almost always, yeah. But I have noticed that a lot of manga/anime aren't that finicky when it comes to the native gender-coding of "exotic" foreign names, and I guess they have a very different sensibility of what sounds feminine or masculine to English speakers.
