This chapter shows that, once again, this mangaka is an immensely talented writer who just couldn't quite get their story told in less chapters than they had planned.

Shame, too, the author is a really great writer, with some nice art style, so it's sad to see such talent totally wasted. But that's what you get when you spend so much time building up the scenario only to waste chapters with filler that no one remains invested.

Somehow, this reminds me of Kuttsukiboshi. Can't put my finger on exactly why, but it just does. Better ending than I expected, though. Here's hoping her next work will stick to a lighter mood. Though I still miss her older art style, it had classic yuri charm whereas this looks sort of like something a straight dude would draw for a Hyperdimension Neptunia doujin.

To be fair, Overwatch can be pretty dark. I mean, you have Tracer who's a stray bullet from becoming a ghost lost to time, D.Va who is a child soldier, Reaper who's basically a tormented undead, and everything to do with Widowmaker. Widowmaker alone probably pushes it darker than most works.

Right, but those dark elements are never really what the series is trying to sell. All media have dark and light aspects to some extent, whether or not the creators realize/accept it. But the brightly colored world of OW where everyone has a laughing emote is largely trying to present itself as a fun and hopeful world, even with some serious subject matter lurking in the background. The kind of super-edgy, soap opera drama content fans like creating totally clashes with the overall emotional aesthetic Blizzard is trying to sell for OW.

Kodama's secret is to make such bad, needlessly edgy soap opera stories that lower the bar so far that her other, purely okay stories look great in comparison. Honestly not a terrible tactic.

Yeah, looking back on Nana Yuri, what's up with that? No matter how happy the characters are, they always have to have some obsession with death. I assume it comes from the author's mentality themselves, which is... concerning.
