To be fair, the lines you quoted are from an older post written prior to the release of this most recent chapter. Unless the person who wrote those words reads Japanese or had access to the English translation of this latest chapter, he/she was going off of the earlier chapters on Dynasty.

Well I'm glad they're doing something different with it, because my reaction seeing it was an instant "Oh, man, not this again."

I had the exact same thought, and I've only been reading yuri since October. I can only imagine the eyeroll-induced eyestrain that you veteran yuri readers must've experienced.

Also: Your avatar reminded me that I need to go get another cup of coffee. So thanks for that.

I actually really like to examine this genre and the genres that stereotypical male fantasies show up in but I am going to cut this short and save the text wall. x_x

I suspect I am not telling you anything you don't already know when I say that the largest publisher of formulaic "men's adventure fiction" is Harlequin, albeit under different imprints.

Apparently enough women are distraught by romance novels containing infidelity and/or not-necessarily-happy endings that (A) authors are rushing to fill the void with works containing neither; and (B) authors are proudly proclaiming these things to prospective customers.

You've never read the comments here on stories with downer endings, I take it? Believe me, it ain't just women!

Oh, on the contrary, the gnashing of teeth and rending of garments which takes place here whenever a non-happy-ending story floats by was the first thing that popped to mind when I saw "GUARANTEED HAPPILY-EVER-AFTER!" I was like "Man, I know who the market is for this!"

Well, assuming any of you lot are into romantic heterosexual BDSM erotica, that is.

Just go and read reviews at Mrs. Giggles instead. The 2 and 3 oogie reviews are generally the most entertaining. No need to subject to yourself to the cookie-cutter awfulness of Harlequin (you only need to read one).

Recently, I have had the occasion to check out the, shall we say "adult", romance novels available on Kindle. Lots of $0.99 offerings from folks just happy to have the ability to self-publish.

And I noticed on many of them, they featured the following:

"ABSOLUTELY NO CHEATING! GUARANTEED HEA!"

I had to google what "hea" meant in this context. It means "Happily Ever After".

Apparently enough women are distraught by romance novels containing infidelity and/or not-necessarily-happy endings that (A) authors are rushing to fill the void with works containing neither; and (B) authors are proudly proclaiming these things to prospective customers.

I was fascinated.

Is Purely Codependence the prequel or is it not translated?

Purely Codependence was released first.

I just did a Bing image search ('cause Bing is better than Google for porn, yo) on "lesbian insect".

I don't recommend it.

That would've made for a much shorter comic.

No, I'm afraid it isn't. We have contacted the Yuri Authorities(tm). They'll be along shortly to handle this.

(Picture the scene in Monsters, Inc. where they find the sock on that one monster after he comes back from scaring little kids. It'll be kinda like that. Flashing lights, klaxons, jump-suited minions, divers alarums, etc.)

Is that when your heart pumps yuri through your body instead of blood?

No, it's when you delude yourself that something wiĺl have an yuri end even when there's no evidence to support it from neither publishers, author... And you still become salty when it doesn't. Even months after the end of the series, apparently.

Speaking of salty, you seem pretty fixated on this topic.

I have to keep reminding myself that "no-means-maybe-and-often-means-yes" is a time-honored and well-worn trope of the romance genre.

Baseball is serious business in Japan. Even girls' softball is. Get it together, Asuka!

Oh Dear God, I just had an evil thought about baseball bats being used as sexual implements. I think I'm destined for The Special Hell.....

People have had those thoughts about baseball bats probably as long as there have been baseball bats.

You don't think....that's why there are baseball bats!?

Ye--

No.

Definitely no.

@Ulquiorra
"A girl with a penis" is still "a girl", lol.

It was, in fact, futanari which got me to realize this.

Can you really place a definition on a word, though? Considering that words are merely verbal shorthand to refer to concepts which people intuitively add meaning to based on their experiences, any definition on a word is subject to change based on the listeners experiences with the concept which is being referred to.

The easiest example is defining an apple. We can say it's a fruit, we can describe its taste, its colour, its shape,... but the only way someone can truly understand what an apple is, is by actually seeing, smelling, feeling, and tasting an apple.

Well, with the obvious exception that not everyone is able to see, smell, feel, and/or taste, so even that way of defining an apple is tricky.

To come back on topic, yuri, as a genre, is therefore defined based on one's own expectations of what a work in the yuri genre ought to contain, and subsequently different people have different concepts of what the yuri genre is.

Though it might be forward of me, I'd offer my suggestion that at the very least, the yuri genre concerns itself with people of the female persuasion and their interpersonal relations with each other.

If you haven't read Semiotics for Beginners yet, you totally should. It'll be right up your alley based on what you've written here.

In my (admittedly limited) experience, when a manga character speaks with slang in the translation, it's usually an attempt to show that the character was depicted with either an accent in the original manga, or a very casual style of speech.

Yuri is whatever Nezchan says it is. That's a definition that works for me.

Sakura Trick is missing several chapters because those chapters are covered by the anime, so the scanlators felt that you could just watch the anime and see what was in those chapters.

Futanari is not yuri. Futanari is controversial here, but you will still find some futa around the site. (Including some very sweet, romantic, not-at-all-hentai-ish futa.)

Drama is "serious", in the sense that it's not comedy. It deals with conflict, but that conflict could just be the growth of a relationship as two people in love learn to deal with one another's various imperfections. Angst is drama with an added element of dread or anxiety.

I thought Heavy Metal was a subgenre of Metal in general while Black and Death come under Extreme metal ;)
There is a big distinction between the two though stylistically. But we are in the wrong thread for that argument.

SEE?!?

The Taxonomy urge is strong in the geek world.

I am reminded of the exacting, hair-splitting discussions I've seen about what qualifies as heavy metal, often accompanied by exacting, hair-splitting discussions about what qualifies as a particular subgenre of heavy metal.

For some folks, the difference between death metal and black metal is SERIOUS BUSINESS, yo.

To make an actual contribution to the topic, I'm new to all of this, so my opinion doesn't matter much. But to the extent that I have noticed, it seems like "yuri" exists in some sort of idealized fantasy land which looks an awful lot like the real world, but isn't. Where every lesbian couple has access to the school roof. Where teenagers can fuck in the school nurse's office and not get caught. (Or if they get caught, the nurse just shakes her head and lets them get on with it because, well, things like that just happen in an all-girls school, y'know? What can you do?)

It's also more about the romance. Budding feelings between two women. Actual love, not just lust.
