the thing is, ambiguity of relationships is one of the classic yuri tropes, and in fact it's only relatively recently that explicitly romantic, let alone sexual, relationships have become more common.

i'm not pointing this out so much to come down on one side or the other but to say that worrying about the exactly defined genre of a particular work might not be very fruitful. which for all i know is what the author is expressing in that interview excerpt.

I agree with you here. Someone might not be able to classify this as "yuri" the way they would for obvious romances like Bloom Into You or Citrus, but it's every bit as defining and in the yuri canon as Utena and Madoka (unless the above is the kind of person who wouldn't watch Madoka because it's just yuri bait. And I mean, damn, Claudine and Maya get symbolically, and practically literally, married in the movie.) Plus, the series is worth it because it means you get to watch the movie! What a treat

right, and with the kaoruko and futaba scene in the movie, and the way those two end up there is basically no ambiguity there. and junnana! so good. damn, now i wanna watch it all over again

There's always a message that tells "You like that ship? Watch the anime" and at this point I don't know why I am refusing to do it. I am addicted to this ship lol

Personally, my reason is that I just get frustrated watching series that are clearly yuri baiting but won't commit. Better to just read the fan works in that case.

this is only my opinion but i think starlight definitely goes beyond yuri-baiting, even if the couples might not ever actually kiss on screen.

seriously, it's one of my all time favourite animes and i think anyone skipping it is really missing out.

I guess if Mitsuki says her name, Aya might not twig if everyone uses Mitsuki's family name at school (she has no/few friends so her peers will not be on first name terms and I'm guessing the teachers will generally use family names ... maybe wrong on this though) ... don't know if 'Mitsuki' is a female or neutral name.

well, the basic character traits remain consistent enough...there are changes in emphasis that probably come from different writers working in different mediums. to me, lanzhu and shioriko come off pretty differently in the game vs. the anime (or at least, they do at first) but as you say, that's in part because of the very different stories the characters are put into.

with all the various onee-samas and imoutos i had a hard enough time figuring out who was who before the author introduced a pair of identical twins...now apart from yoshioka and watanabe i dont really have any idea what's going on. still, nice to see some progress on that front!

Yuuko's jargon really did get more pronounced, as teased earlier in this collection. I'm not sure about the timeline though as she's still a temp here and if this was after her overseas posting she'd more likely be a permanent employee.

Maybe it's just the decision by the translators to use French because in the original she used English :P Personally I like it a bit more how this was handled here:

Love the fact that the prostitute didn't end up falling in love or smth its way more realistic that way

though i do appreciate that in spite of her determination not to get emotionally involved, she has become somewhat fond of the client, to the point of actively wanting to comfort her. this ambiguity also feels much more real than the usual dichotomy where the sex worker is either just waiting to fall in love and be 'taken away from all that', or on the other hand completely jaded and cynical.

funny, i was just reading the other version of this earlier today...i think i preferred that translation if i'm honest. i don't even know, it might be super literal and i don't wanna slam the TLers hard work but the way the delivery girl's dialect is rendered in this one comes across as a bit over the top to me? like, in a way that doesn't really fit the tone of the story.

story itself is still super cute tho, love that role reversal scene as well.

i won't say i wasn't interested in the possibilities of kaede/koyuki and nanami/ruuko but lbr these two were always endgame, 100%. wait, do we even need to spoiler here? it's in the story tags and is kinda the entire premise of the work anyway...

story itself wasn't bad, wonderful art as expected from ohsawa yayoi. nanami went pretty hard with the whole fake breakup thing, just to teach kae a lesson? idk

yeah, i love the art and there were some really sharp bits of writing, and scenes and mini-arcs that worked very well, but thanks to some convoluted plotting and unearned melodrama, overall i can't say it quite hangs together as the cohesive masterpiece it might have been.

still, i absolutely think arata iri is one of the most talented working in the genre, and absolutely has the potential to create something truly amazing in the future.

A lot of readers had been mentioning it: piercings aren't a big deal, but the polish? Gotta be hella hard putting it on and removing it every single day!

well, for most types removing/changing piercings itself isn't really a big deal, though honestly they do seem like they'd be more of a giveaway if (when) aya looks closer - despite mitsuki's reaction in this chapter, any two people might both use black nail polish, but how many would have that many holes in their ears in the exact same pattern?

damn i change my nail polish once or twice a week at the most, and it still leaves em kinda brittle feeling...
