Them not being the stereotypical ''trope-ish'' protagonists you'd find in most series is definitely one of the best and most interesting thing about this. They're both a bit messed up and unsure of themselves and they miss a lot of social cues, the way a lot of teenagers actually are.They both feel very ''real'' to me as a result.

And funnily enough, the "swimsuit episode at a hotel pool" plot is something that was first included in the anime as an addition to that swimsuit chapter. Kinda neat how the author occassionally makes anime callbacks.

It's a bit of a twist on the ''notice me senpai'' trope, I like that. She gets a happy ending even if her feelings aren't reciprocated (or even confessed), because she got to grow a bit emotionally thanks to it. Having a crush is a fun, positive thing in itself, especially at that age. People tend to forget that sometimes.
