Jokes and memes aside, it is really weird how some people are so fixated on Yuzu and Mei fucking

I think because Citrus has/had this rep of this steamy taboo romance. So I think people believe it should have happened by now, a lot of the early expectation as far as I remember was basically what FlowerChild's works ended up being, where their manga focus on a messy highly sexual toxic relationship.

Plus various other long running Yuri manga have had some kind of sexual encounter, even if it happens off page, it's something that has definitely happened. Citrus for having this spicy rep surprisingly hasn't gone very far with it.

I understand that for sure and it's not a big deal anyway, but Citrus hasn't ever really been a spicy series has it? It was only so superficially for a bit. It had "spicy" scenes mostly earlier on but the tone and direction wasn't that way and it's been years since then so it's interesting that the expectation still lingers. Citrus seemed to be making a point earlier on about its characters' mental states and that was it. It's really been an "innocent" series even when those scenes were present.

The issue isn’t for me about “fucking” per se but about the trajectory of the characters, especially Mei. As has recently been pointed out, OG Mei was a Proper Japanese Lady masking a smoldering volcano of emotion—sexual desire, yes, but also, among other things, grief over the “loss” of her father. Her resistance to going all-in sexually with Yuzu was more about struggling to keep herself under control rather than about fending off Yuzu’s advances.

It’s easy to forget that the start of the benighted “Second Arranged Marriage” arc interrupted a Mei-Yuzu makeout session that both had been longing for. Ever since then Mei has consistently been transformed from a firecracker (h/t to Altair for the phrase) into a damp mop.

Had readers still been getting regular doses of those Mei-Yuzu hickey-leaving competitions of the past I’m pretty sure there would have been fewer laments about “when will they fuck?”.

Yeah the series feels inconsistent I think. There was moments that built it's rep as this steamier romance, but then there's other times where it feels nothing like that. The series is something I wouldn't exactly call "wholesome", but generally it's not fiery and sexually intense either. I think it leaves various parts of it's audience not really getting what they wanted or expected out of the series. Even years later people want what they liked about earlier parts to return, some of that passionate and intense emotion at least.

I'm willing to bet they'll also skip the scene of Himari and butler Yori kissing at the school festival and we'll be left with nothing more than kisses on the cheek in the anime despite this being one of the rare series where an adaptation could've got further than that.

Yeah this is part of what I find frustrating. This could very well be an adaption that doesn't adapt the full on kisses from the manga, and we need more kisses in Yuri works as it is...not less.

I feel like an ideal adaptation of this would be to just go up to the end of volume 3, spending a little more focus on adapting that material while working in some details from later volumes and filling the rest with original content. Alas, animes are a committee-driven thing and since this is a music-themed series, the records company involved likely played a part in pushing for the anime to cover both arcs so they could promote more of their artists.
The fact we get next to zero KaoMari moments stings just as much.

I'd also be fine with your suggestion for the handling of the adaption and material. That's an interesting thought about the record company side of things as well, sounds possible.

Yeah I regret reading this today. I try to avoid things... this disturbing and that... ugh. I hate it, I hate for so many reasons but mainly because it's so messed up and now it's stuck in my head.

Hitting the ejection seat on this one.

100% this for me as well :\

I get the feeling they know there's 0 way for there to be a season 2 at this point, so they're trying to have their cake and eat it by putting some of the series as a manga special on Youtube, while using the anime to rush to the end of the Shiho arc. Which just doesn't work in my opinion, as the anime feels like a rushed mess that ultimately doesn't do justice to any of the material / any of the couples. Especially with YoriHima being thrown under the bus by the anime.

It's a typical manga pusher product with lowest possible budget, regardless how enthusiastic staff and performers are. You stuff in as much of the story in as possible, so you can get more people trapped by the manga continuation, and hope for the best in terms of sales boost.

Pushers almost never get a second season or full adaptation.

I think it varies because there's a fair amount of anime that adapt what they can of the source material. Where it's an okay or even good but incomplete adaption. In my experience this level of rushing a series isn't very common, combined with all the various other problems. This and Unnamed Memory (as I was discussing with DrJamesFox previously) are I think the biggest rush jobs on anime this season, and maybe even this year so far.

Part of my issue is this doesn't even sell people on wanting to buy the manga from what I've seen. If this adapted what it could and then left on the note of to see the conclusion of Shiho's arc buy the manga!, I would have been fine with that as long as it handled the material it did adapt properly. The manner in which the anime butchered it's adaption of the manga is completely crazy to me, and frankly bizarre even when comparing it to other adaptions with issues. I also say they realized there was 0 chance of another season because of how much the behind the scenes sound like a complete mess, again more so than usual.

This whole situation is also interesting to me in contrast, because Yagakimi's anime adapted what it could, didn't completely rush it, and even though the season ends in a somewhat awkward place it's still a generally beloved adaption. All people really want with it is a season 2 from what I know. With Whispering I think we could have been in a similar spot with the adaption, but sadly instead of a season 2 we need a complete adaption reboot.

They can't adapt the internal rants of a LN in manga form. The format is totally different.

You can have a lot of introspection in a LN, but the heart of manga is dialogues. Too much exposition and tldr; and the manga gets axed.

Sure you can, just look at Otherside Picnic. It's just kinda hard to make internal monologues in a manga not boring when they're not on a situation with more intensity than "this bitch gave me money and won't take it back >:/" lol. Otherside Picnic uses it's monologues to convey the feeling of experiencing alien, otherwise unknowable dramatic situations, like actually getting a girlfriend from Canada instead of having to make one up

I wouldn't mind internal monologues for a character drama like this personally.

Though I'm also fine without and am still enjoying this manga for what it is.

I didn't quite read Bocchi but for the little knowledge i have on Bocchi, it's a music manga about an extreme socially awkward girl who play guitar in a group. What the link with a girl getting shoved into a strange love triangle with a Vampre, an human and a vampire killer ? I kinda fail to see.

Funny face components

This author probably got some inspiration from Bocchi with the expressions and humor, as popular media does with influencing works that come after. Though until we get the next popular anime with a socially awkward girl and varied comedy elements people are going to say everything that's socially awkward is Bocchi. Honestly I'm half expecting to hear someone say Bocchi invented Watamote.

Well I wish you the best with finding something that you enjoy more. Those of us that do enjoy this will be carrying on and continuing to have fun with it. Have a nice day.

Annoyingly it looks like the anime, in trying to fit Shiho's arc into the cour, has skipped over the whole YoriHima summer festival arc (chapters 30-32), so Ichijinsha's put out a voiced comic instead. No subtitles, but you can easily read along to the scanlation.

As far as I know the summer festival arc is a fan favorite, and regarded by a lot readers as some of the best YoriHima content. So that's definitely a choice with the anime...

Yeah they've made some interesting choices. This is the one time I expected (and hoped) they'd accept not adapting everything but they really want to do it anyway. Would have been better to give them an extra episode but that's not how it works anyway.

Yeah...sadly they're ruining the adaption by doing an impossible rush to squeeze everything they can in, and at the cost of blatantly ruining the main couple in the anime. The festival story is very important, and a special moment. That should without any doubt be part of the anime, and not a Youtube manga edit that has to be watched outside of the anime.

It's along the lines of cutting the filling out of a pie, and throwing it aside. I hate it so much...

~

Editing to respond to your edit as well

Edit: I wonder if the production issues are the reason this was cut. The whole thing is messy. Who knows how much scrambling is happening behind the scenes. They announced that 11 and 12 are now delayed until further notice.

Edit: Actually I can say I'm genuinely pissed off with the anime now. The chapters being removed from the anime adaption for a Youtube video feels cheap and frustrating. YuriHima are reduced to a consolation prize.

The shortest way to summarize my mood is: Damn It

^Are we talking about getting embarrassed easily? From what I saw people around the world found Bocchi relatable, so I'd say it's more universal than Japanese specific

@GrimEater I mean there is that side, however I think it's also a time for people to celebrate like this artist is doing. Along with a good time for people to come together. Companies don't hold all the power one way or another. Also I do agree with the sentiment of showing your pride year round.

Cool to see this after watching the final just a bit ago. I really loved the series overall, and I need a season 2.
