"It's hard to hide bodies", and even if you do that leaves a disappearance.

"the fact that they have historically had an extremely low sex crime rate per capita than most developed nations"

Well, maybe. Particularly for sex crimes, low rates may reflect low rates of reporting. If reporting a rape means you get publicly humiliated and the rapist probably gets off, you're likely to not report the rape.

Also Japan is infamous for groping on subway trains, to the point that they have special women-only train cars during peak hours.

The US has crime victimization surveys ("Asking as a harmless researcher, have you ever experienced X?") which acts as a cross-check on police reports.

Nice. Looks like the service don't come cheap. Checked it out a lil bit more and they seem to sell wlw toys too.

I can't read the site well, but the 'white' service, which seems to refer to sex -- "female companion sex cost", I would paste the kanji if I could copy it -- is about $160 for an hour. If anything that's slightly cheap for a First World sex worker; $200-300 would be common. A date is $120 for 90 minutes, I assume intimacy not included. Overnight is $900, again not unusual price for that.

(Site prices are in yen of course, I'm assuming 100 yen to the dollar... actual exchange is 106.)

By contrast the escort site I found the other day is $170 for 60 minutes, plus $30+ for the love hotel. https://japanese-escort-girls.com/price.php "No sex" but that just means no penis in vagina, at least officially.

The author of this is author of LUMINOUS BLUE, you guys figure out the rest. Peace.

As I haven't read or even heard of that before, this tells me nothing.

do brothels actually have their own websites in Japan or this is just a manga/anime thing?

Escort services certainly do; that was true even in the US, at least before FOSTA/SESTA. Escort and brothel websites in countries such are legal tend to be more explicit and straightforward than US ones.

Looking at one site, the 'incall' system is you meet the girl somewhere and she takes you to a love hotel.

How many actual 'brothels' Japan has, I dunno. But a sex agency having a 'menu' of workers and services and reviews is quite realistic.

I never seen the real lesbian brothel in real life before. I wonder where all those located.

Im not sure they really exist lol.

It is probably more along the line of escort services that cater for both? So sure their are lesbian prostitutes but I doubt many or any physical brothels cater to JUST lesbians - you'd just drastically lower your customer base - and some kinda phone / web only service for lesbians would probably work better to fill the niche?

If you're a wlw who wants a sex worker, you can check a regular brothel or escort and ask for workers who do women.

If you're a lesbian sex worker who doesn't want to have male customers, it's unclear how much customer base you'd have. Could always put out an escort 'shingle' and hope, but I don't know if business would be enough to be reliably supporting.

I found the page with Matsuri seemingly telling Yuzu she needs to clip her nails. I did not notice the implications at the time because I was too busy crying I think.

I had to double check that the third wheels in this and MUL didn't have the same name. Nope: Ritsuko here, Risako over there.

...kind of too similar for monthly updates of somewhat similar comics and a brain not used to less common Japanese names...

"Non-chan is speaking with HER so normally"
So pretty much trans.

Or translation error, or translation choice about a gender-neutral sentence. I would be curious as to the original Japanese, or to Japanese conventions for referring to drag queens.

Oh no, I know exactly how this will end and it's going to be horrible.

At the end, Chishiro's gonna get bullied again and but Kisaki will be nowhere to be seen. Her shoes will get thrown into a tree and she'll flash back again to when she was younger and Kisaki helped her. Only now Kisaki IS THE TREE and the branches creak and manage to give the shoes back to Chishiro before she freezes up permanently. If the author wants to stab us extra hard, she'll freeze up with her branches curved to shape a heart, and then maybe the spot becomes famous for new yuri lovers to visit in hopes of making their relationships blossom, with an Old Lady Chishiro telling the legend of the heart-shaped tree to a some younger girls.

Yuri's allowed to have happy endings these days, you know.

You think if they bang, those flowers will turn to fruit?

Only if fertilization is successful, I'd presume. Come to think of it, many tree species have both male and female flowers, or even have their flowers combine both male and female sexual structures. So... any bets that Kisaki is similarly hermaphroditic (or will become so)?

Been a while since I saw some good futa!

Mainstream manga (consisting primarily of the same 2 isekai plots and some high school harem life plots) is just as horrific and trope-ridden. I shouldn't even have to go on.

The problem is that you've confused "manga genres have tropes", which no one could argue with, with "manga is as horrifically trope-ridden as US superhero comics".

Manga is a far more diverse market, or set of markets, than US comics have been. We've got the shounen, shoujo, seinen, and josei markets. I suspect that even if we looked just at shounen we would find a lot more diversity than in US superheroes.

The very non-tropey seinen manga Mushishi did well in Japan: "The ten volumes have sold over 3.8 million copies.[79] Individual volumes frequently appeared on the weekly lists of best-selling manga there."

380,000 sales per volume is better than top selling comic issues in the US, almost 3x bigger than Japan...

This has changed: bookstore sales are now the majority (vs. 'direct market'/comic stores), and bookstore sales are dominated by juvenile and manga, with superheroes at only 10%.

Ok, I'm going to ask a naive question: what do they mean by "juvenile fiction" comics? Something like Archie comics? Or teen adventure stories like those so common in Japanese light novels?

The article mentions Dog Man and Telgemeier's Guts, so I think stuff like that and Lumberjanes.

https://www.vulture.com/2017/06/raina-telgemeier-kids-comics.html talks more about the market and links to the NYT top 10 https://www.nytimes.com/books/best-sellers/paperback-graphic-books/?_r=0 none of which are an Archie collection (or a superhero collection.)

The pay for gay tag seems more to be used as tho it was 'gay for pay' - its often used for 'being gay' to make money- whereas the prostitution tag is for when they are gay, (or het if there are any) and just doing it for money too.

The "gay for pay" tag was recently changed to "pay for gay", on the grounds of all the stories supposedly really being the latter. I find the former tag more euphonious (not sure why), but oh well.

To be fair, amecomi (useful word) were in fact heavily dominated by decades by DC/Marvel superheroes stories, the way D&D dominates tabletop RPGs. There was other stuff, but pretty niche.

This has changed: bookstore sales are now the majority (vs. 'direct market'/comic stores), and bookstore sales are dominated by juvenile and manga, with superheroes at only 10%.

Why do we have separate Prostitution and Pay For Gay tags? I could see it if we had any het prostitution stories but that wasn't the case here.

Senpai is a 1st year PhD student, not getting her doctorate time soon. Entering a PhD program at age 23, right after college, is perfectly normal, among those who do go for PhDs.

Alternately people go for masters degrees. Kouhai sounds a bit young at 22, but that could be a matter of where her birthday falls in the year; anyway, she's not being called a simpleton.

Kon's personality is the same as Maki's hahaha that shows that parents are not the ones you share blood with, parents are the ones who raise you

Well, it's fiction. AIUI, scientifically, Big 5 personality traits are half genetic, half random. In general kids don't have the same personalities as their parents or their siblings. Though obviously culture, habits, and attitudes can be shared via upbringing.
