I really wanted to get an update on the couple but this premise is thin and forced.

This we can agree on. While I appreciate the look into their interpersonal dynamics and Mari's background getting fleshed out more (plus Eri's a pretty interesting character), and admittedly Ran's always been something of a worrywart who gets overly hung up on minor details, the execution here feels majorly gratuitous and forced.
It also makes Edogawa-sensei look farcically immature and fickle which... probably isn't the intention.

It was more that Mari never told her sister that she gave up on guys. I know it's thin but I want Mari to say those words, before I accept her lesbian card as cannon.

Reckon you'll be waiting for a really long time given this Hanashima Mari, Flippant Extraordinaire by the grace of God, who never sweated the small stuff.

Also? It's canon not cannon - sheezus people, the spelling matters >:c

This chapter seems to suggest that Mari didn't completely stop sleeping with guys, which kills my theory, and also saddens me.

Tolerably certain they're referring to the time before she started dating Ran.

You might be right but it's just the impression that I got.

I just re-read the chapter and literally can't see how. Everything Eri muses about her implies past tense when it comes to that.

I appreciate that Tei's response to this oppai-loli wasn't envy but rather utter bafflement at this extremely Japanese nonsense.

This manga has a school as big as city and as populated as a city and it's the oppai-loli what's non-sensical?

Don't forget it's also surrounded by a wall that would let Trump die a happy man. Or keep out marauding Titans I s'pose.

Me, I wish I could recall if at some point we were told about their family situation. Are her parents married? Divorced? I don't remember at all.

I'm pretty sure this is the first time ever we hear anything about Hanashima's home life.

Unlike that one, the understanding is not quite mutual here, though, leading to the current situation.

To be quite blunt the current situation is due to Ran going weird for pretty nonsensical reasons that border on the gratuitous as far as writing goes. They were fucking like rabbits for the better part of Mari's last year in HS - y'know, when Edogawa actually should have kept her distance morally and ethically speaking - and NOW she suddenly develops reservations about "being in a student's home" (as Mari rightly points out she's not even her student anymore)?
That's pretty what. tier.

Got witnessed in flagrante delicto by the younger sister who's also one of her students? Yeah I can see how that'd feel pretty awks at school (and in general), but as a reason to stop showing her face in the club she's supposed to supervise never mind now breaking up? Yeah, no. That's puerile and downright ridiculous.

If Mari is treating the whole thing like some random caprice of Edogawa's, well, that's because it basically is.

If they are still married, it gives a whole new meaning to Mari's comment: "Me and mother have always been showing up with boys."

Would definitely like to hear some details. It already sounds like Eri and Mari have different fathers (not too unusual, and doesn't seem to affect their relationship any) and Mari refers to the parents in the plural, on the next page casually mentioning her mother regardless "showing up with boys all the time" (implicitly openly).
Now THAT definitely sounds like a bit unusual household.
Some kind of "open marriage" arrangement perhaps, or one of those marriages of convenience where the partners find their sexual and emotional fulfillment elsewhere?

Not to mention Ran's reasons are pretty ridiculous, no shit Mari isn't taking her seriously. Plus her smug self-assurance is based on fairly extensive firsthand experience of being very able to charm sensei's pants off as necessary. (A necessary reminder how her brain processes the whole "relationship" thing in the first place...)

To me it'd have been more fun if Aria had already been a secret lover of Chiyo; especially if Ichiko then found out later.

^oh it's definitely Closure's doing. She clearly likes giving the toasters quirky ass personality matrixes.

...note that this also indicates that they're either A) fundamentally just glorified chatbots rather than "artificial people" making all this rather squicky Cargo Shipping when you start thinking about it, or B) if they're true "strong" AIs then they exist in a condition of abject slavery where their very minds and personalities can be erased or rewritten at any time at the caprice of their owners...

Pick your poison.

Hanashima being 10/10 as usual. Gotta love deadpan imouto-chan's benign "long as you're happy" resignation to her (half?) sister's foibles.

^tbf the obviously impractical stuff is mostly found among the range-tile Ops who as such needn't concern themselves with such considerations as much.

...and then you have like Astesia in her damn ballgown. le sigh

So, who wants to take a guess at what tag we'll be adding next chapter?

Autobiographical?

i feel like she wont want mai anymore once she sees her , like not being disgusted by her but since she has experienced too much at that point i dont think mai can win her over.

Like one of the girls did her so much she couldnt walk for a short time and even fucked her more time than she was paid to do so.
Mai may be weird but the same can be said by asumi , even her boss got her horny right away and she keeps having sexual fantasies with mai all the time.

Right because their mutual obsession is totally just about bedroom performance. BRB need to find my eyes, I think they rolled under the bookshelf.

it's usually just joking about it.

Considering the relative frequency with which stranger notions get espoused 'round these parts in complete seriousness... kinda hard to tell.

Especially as it cleaves real close to certain mindsets not infrequently encountered among "shippers" online.

^AK-15 is basically just AK-12 in the older 7.62x39mm (the OG WW2-vintage Soviet intermediate cartridge, still widely used) while RPK-16 is the SAW derivative in the base 5.45x39mm (the Seventies-vintage successor)

^there's actually some irony there. She used to be stupidly sincere even about her bitchy streak (which got her into some trouble at least once) and that weird honesty made her strangely likable. Her separation from Sachi and the rest at the start of the third year however forced her to develop enough diplomatic regard for other people's feelings to bite her tongue and keep her mouth shut when necessary (witness her regular association with the Horrible Cooking Couple) - in effect engage in a degree of deception, seeing as she's hardly any less caustic on the inside. (Interesting comparisons can be made with Kuro's character developement here.)

So, in a sense, while she's grown up and been forced to learn some regard for others she's also lost her old childlike honesty in the process. (Seemed kinda relieved to be able to let her waspish tongue run free around Futaki who doesn't mind, tho...) Wonder if Sachi's picked up on that change, too?

I did not expect the Scooby Gang to end up being exponentially more interesting (or at least have a more coherent arc) than the MCs.

Rusty

Full disclosure - I essentially stopped paying attention to the series after the Three Stooges' storyline wrapped up.

TBF it's not exactly unusual for teenagers to get all, like, deep IRL.

Factual depths of reflection and actual epiphanies tend to... leave something to be desired, but doesn't stop them from being excessively serious about it.

i want a plot twist where it was all a joke and she's actually an adult

...who gets stuck on literal grade school math problems?

Could be the other little girl's homework and she's just trolling the MC 'cus she knows the misunderstanding and enjoys playing into it.

Considering she'd apparently been mulling over it for some time before Tae chanced by, (x) doobt
