I kinda get what you mean but I think its because society changed by years and they already made shiiiit load of hidden or sad lesbian stories, now yuri and gay people are not that rare so stories start to focus on other elements. Like in Swap, there is a potential sci-fi, drama, romance series there but author made a cute laid-back story about highschool girls. About highschool mangas... yes they are dumb but they have always been like that. 'Cause all high schoolers are dumb, like me.
