We're edging to draw out the enjoyment. Or maybe there'll be a timeskip and we'll just get flashbacks of certain bits.

I think Ai is faking being happy, because she feels guilty towards Kon.

But as soon as Kaede will reenter the picture, she'll drop everything and say "Sorry" to Kon.

Ai's happiness with Kon is an "ordinary" happiness. Saying "welcome home", working in the day, sleeping together, preparing dinner, lazing on a day off. A very simple happiness. It's suited to Kon, but is it suited to Ai?

Ai's happiness with Kaede is "fireworks" happiness. Going to see the stars, going on random road trips, bungee jumping... a life on the edge, like they're going to die tomorrow so they don't want any regret. A thrilling happiness.

Ai's like a moth to a flame. She's been burnt, will get burned, but she doesn't care. Kon is going to suffer.

Ah I can see this. Reminds me of White Album 2 (het, unfortunately) where Setsuna was the more "normal love and happiness" and Kazusa was the type of intense, all-consuming love that wars are fought over.

Here it feels like Kaede is an addiction for Ai. She gives Ai momentary bliss in exchange for wrecking her life and other relationships.
But love has often been compared to addiction.

i wonder, is this a thing for non-translated manga centered around pairs of teenaged female friends? where the relationship between the two is clearly ambiguous but the author is happily stringing their readers along, never wanting to fully commit to what the core audience is hoping for?

"Never"? Do you know something we don't? Should I stop hoping for more and just accept that this "love yet to bloom" will not be blooming in this story?

^Agreed. Unless there is an obvious indication that there is a third person, I'll give the artist the benefit of the doubt that they're simply drawing the characters without putting much thought into composition.

Much later in the WN: There may be a side character that is nursing a hopeless unrequited crush on another side character. But even that may be a reach.

The ending of the chapter is foreboding, but I don't think this author will rehash the conflict of Ai abandoning Kon to chase after Kaede.
Perhaps it will be Kon that encounters Ai and some sort of conflict will arise from that. Kon fears Ai still isn't over Kaede and that may lead Kon to making some rash decisions.

Miyagi doesn't especially like holding the leash, but Sendai loves it when she does.

Or it's Firefly's way of applying her self-healing mechanic to others.

An anime adaptation of Roll Over And Die has just been announced (together with an announcement that the LN will come out of hiatus). This means BV was right, we have NINE upcoming yuri anime, three of which are confirmed to be coming this year.

I'm shocked by this. I had completely written off that series after such a long hiatus.
It may irritate me at times but overall I enjoy the series for its blend of yuri and horror in a fantasy setting.
