Mm, good stuff.

For a moment there, it looked like Kyouko was gonna throw her soda in the guy's face — but of course, this is Kyouko, so she'd never do something like that with food. (Her cola not even drop.).

That's a very unusual sunburn she got, though. Fantastic punchline.

Thanks for that! I've a lot sketchier knowledge of the direct canon than I think sometimes.

As usual, Kitaku does a marvelous job. Long live the NijiGaku polycule.

Oh, my heart.
I love so much the way that Rina just knifes through Mia's tough front, and the way that Mia gets excited about things despite herself. They're so good together. They're so cute together.

Wow, this is terrific. Some gorgeous art and design here, and some great pairings. The "magazine" conceit is a particularly nice bit, and I'm terribly disappointed that I can't win a giant Sasuke pool toy.

EDIT: I realize I also have to completely cosign Zako's author's note for "RinaAi Rendezvous 2", particularly about how Rina went from zero friends to one, and how Ai picked her one friend out of a hundred. Yes. Zako gets it.

Very nicely done. (Heck, I think my sole quibble is that Yuu has a bed at all, instead of the sofa she had as a high schooler. I suppose you don't always get to furnish your college apartment exactly how you want.) I particularly loved the quiet moment afterwards in the bath, when Yuu admits recognizing that Shizuku had gotten too into a role — but without any judgement there. Just "this is a thing that you, who I love, do" and "yes, you know me really well".

Yeah, "devolution" is a bit of a surprising term. I'd figure "regifting" would be the more idiomatic term?

After two and a half years of playing SIFAS, I for the first time had a plain white feather turn into a rainbow UR feather on a roll. I thought it was just this author making that up, but apparently it can really happen.

Ah, Minazuki Juuzou — gorgeous, almost engraving-like artwork, and some of the most depraved sex you can have with all the participants still being happy about it.

I should mention that a TV anime series of Nijiyon shorts has been announced for early 2023. It's unclear how it's going to be structured, since Yu, Shioriko, Lanzhu, and Mia are on the promo picture we've gotten — it may be an adaptation of scattered existing strips or a complete new season.

But in other news, I just realized that Season 1 #43, "Old Maid", is a reference to a streamed event from before the game even launched, where Kasumi, Setsuna, and Karin's actors had to play a bluffing game called "Little Red Riding Hood Does Not Sleep"; in particular, Tomoriru (Setsuna) kept saying "Who knows?" with a perfect poker face whenever asked for information.

Were that what anyone was saying, I'd agree with you. Instead, they're saying things like "the artist draws het, therefore male" and "a drawing not done from a character's perspective must necessarily be the male gaze". I just find it odd.

I don't think there's denseness, just Minami trying to chicken out. Anya always does know what's up.

Oh, that was glorious. Particularly funny that while I expected Yoshino and Koume to realize what had happened, I got pulled up short by Yumi recognizing Aiko.

...a lot of really weird gender essentialism going on here.

I rather liked this one; it's really nice to see Ayumu being proactive without things slipping into yandere territory. Not entirely clear on why they're at a love hotel; the setup has the vibe of this being need-based rather than let's-try-this-fun-thing. As college students, perhaps they've moved out from their parents' places and don't have privacy in their new situation? It's hard to imagine them not rooming together if they were away at the same college, so maybe they've got another roommate, or maybe they're at different universities and each have a roommate at their respective apartments/dorms.

(Though I admit I have this sudden vision of Lanzhu trying to talk everybody into the post-graduation plan involving her buying a mansion for them all to live in so they can all stay together, so maybe it's just that they don't want to rub everyone else's noses in it. Geez, Nijigasaki's canons and fanworks keep making me want to commit fanfiction...)

I mean, SIFAS, but...

(One game event, "Wear the Outfit I Picked!", involves Mia out with some of the other girls, each picking out clothes for another. Mia's side story for the event sets the trip up like this:
Maki: Is it true you don't have a lot of casual clothes?
Mia: Yeah, but I don't really care. My school uniform is fine. Why, who told you?
Maki: Oh, Rina did. She said she wanted to go out on a date with you in everyday clothes.
Mia: Hey, where can I get some casual clothes? )

Eeeeeee! Love us some KasuPomu.

(Probably the most Kasumi-Ayumu branch of the subfranchise is Nijiyon, FWIW, where it's clear that Kasumi really admires Ayumu, and considers her both a strong rival and too pure to really play tricks on.)

I'm going to be serious for a moment here — I'm really not seeing the shutdowns that tictoc nerd and rouward are seeing in the second season of the anime. I'd actually suggest that the way that Kasumi proudly wore her hairpin at a critical moment and was super comfortable volunteering Shizuku's house for the "training camp" both serve to reinforce their relationship. (And the way that Ophelia was hanging out with Kasumi while she was "plotting" at night suggests she's over there a lot.) As for KasuPomu, I'd point to the bit in the stills where Ayumu is helping Kasumi with her tie, Kasumi is blushing, and half the cast is peeking around the corner like they're watching something naughty. (I'd also say that A•Zu•Na was presented more as Shizuku shipping SetsuPomu than a thruple.)

Now, I would say the second season felt something of a reaction to the way the first season really did feel like it was trying to push particular couples — or rather, the way that certain characters weren't explored outside of being in a pairing; EmmaKarin is probably the most pointed example. The mandate to establish the subunits is probably a big part of that — you must have Ai and Karin actually talking with each other to make DiverDiva make any sense at all — but there definitely was an effort, even beyond that, to mix the established groups up a bit. That said, there was still some reinforcement of those first-season pairs: the ShizuKasu stuff I mentioned, or Rina hugging Ai before the DiverDiva live, or Karin still leaning on Emma a lot, or all the YuPomu reinforcement.

(If you want official KasuPomu, I'd actually say that that's strongest in Nijiyon, and in the occasional game remarks about how much Kasumi considers her her strongest rival.)

I'd guess that Yu works from home, writing songs for idols who can't create them ex nilho on their own. Ayumu's career is more ambiguous; maybe she

  • Is now a professional idol, or is in an idol-adjacent career — actor, singer, model, VA...
  • ...or perhaps she presently manages or produces idols for some big entertainment company, and is running Setsuna's and Kasumi's pro careers (maybe some others too) at 346 Pro
  • Or perhaps she went into teaching, and she's the faculty advisor for her school's idol club
  • Or I guess she could be doing something not idol related, it could happen

The SIP childhood friends — RinPana and HonoKotoUmi — are omitted, but so are a lot of the Sunshine ones: no DiaKananMari, to start. Kanan arguably counts also as Chika's and You's childhood friend, and whether Yoshiko or Ruby or both are Hanamaru's childhood friend(s) seems to vary by continuity.
Which is to say you gotta draw the couplings you wanna. And all these are very cute.
