Aya, you fool. Just move with her. You can get married in California, you know? It's the state least likely to strike same sex marriage from the Book. Unlike Japan having ONE district that gives civil union licenses smh

That's kinda rad. I DIDN'T KNOW they even gave licenses in Japan yet. DANG. How much of a flex would that be? "Oh me and my wife? We married in Japan to show our support."

Japan is at the stage where most people are fine with the idea of gay marriage in theory as long as it's happening somewhere it won't disturb people's sense of normalcy too much. So, for the moment, it's stuck in a few test districts

It's probably still one of the most progressive countries in Asia for even doing that much, honestly

^ The appeal more comes from their character archetypes
Himeko is played as the wholesome team mom
Kafka is portrayed as more of a dommy mommy

It ends up giving the pairing a sort of double MILF appeal

  1. I don't like the guy character. I don't really think he need to be there anymore and is sort of just third wheeling the main two

  2. I can't beleive we're still in the "totally don't even recognize our relationship as ever being possibly romantic" and "getting overly blushy over an indirect compliment" stage. Plus, the whole "I don't actually have a crush on her, I just admire her because she looks cool and I think she's brave" bs. I thought we were over those sort of stereotypes in yuri, but I guess this author wanted to do a period piece.

This chapter title got me all excited for finally some sort of development away from the usual sterotypes of the last 20-30 chapters, but it ended up just being gross. I don't care that the token straight guy thinks the girls are cute. Who gives a shit.

I feel like the point of this chapter was more that Aya is worried that she might have a rival for Koga's affection and is trying to deal with that by making herself even more attractive, as would be expected of a gyaru type of girl. It may feel a bit like fluff but it is speaking to deeper issues in their relationship that may need to be sorted out later

Also, sure Jeff "jerkface" McNarita might be a bit annoying and pushy but there is a certain comedy to his bullshit

^ They have canonically met at some point before the "creation" scene at the start of the game but it was left extremely vague as to how they knew each other. It is doubtful that they are blood related, though. Stelle does tell March that Kafka "used to be nice," implying that they were close

These two build up enough heat together to thaw Jarilo VI and then overshoot so they have to solve the planet being too hot now

The crumpled toothpaste, deodorant, and a bar of soap makes me think this must be Mitsuki's place
I think a girl like Aya would never have a sink so free of beauty products

Unfortunate. I wanted them to have something sweet and for the witch to turn out to just be misunderstood. WELP. ༎ຶ‿༎ຶ

Honestly, I'm kind of sick of the "evil girl was just misunderstood" trope. It's such a cliche at this point

That being said, Knight's condescending attitude didn't earn a lot of sympathy points lol

what are you on about? condecending attitude is equal to being enslaved as an undead that can’t even talk to an psychopath witch? eh?

Obviously if it happened in reality, it is horrifying and disproportionate but in a weird cartoony story, exaggerated vengeance can be much more amusing.

I would have liked for this to be a part one and seen how knight gets out of it and continues to have over the top dark slapstick adventures. It could be a hilarious concept if the author leaned into the silly side more and Knight always recovered after

Same lol- since magical revolution did it ive seen at least 2-3 others start with almost the same set up! - I think it was the first to do it?

Oh, definitely not lol
The opening comes from a popular trope in otome games thst are set in faux medieval european settings. The public denouncement by the prince was originally a cliche where the villainess recieves her just punishment at the end of the game but later got subverted into a trope to show what an asshole the prince is and thereby set up a "rags to riches" plotline for the MC with a newer and better love interest

I think the reason she's crossdressing and how she feels about it will determine how much of a twist it is. If she's just doing it because everyone expects the next head of state to be male, and it's essentially a uniform she has to wear, then I don't think it'll change all that much.

I did get the impression from how she acted at the end that she might somehow be ditsy enough not to know that people think she's a guy in that outfit

I think this is the fourth or fifth series I've read with this start... looks good tho

This kind of start is a full blown trope at this point. It's like if you want to have Otome or Villainess Yuri, this is almost "required".

On this subject, there's something I myself wonder about.

Villainess yuri is supposed to be a deconstruction & reconstruction of common otome romance tropes. Especially the one about the heroine's love interest having an evil fiancée who is jealous of the heroine, and bullies her, and is eventually punished and humiliated for her bad deeds.

And every time a yuri manga shows this, it's always the same scene: in some kind of public place, in front of a huge crowd, the prince hugs the heroine and points his finger towards the villainess and yells that their engagement is over. He then goes on to list all the evildoings of the villainess, and trumpets his love for the common-born but angelic heroine.

What I would like to know is: are there really so many otome games where a scene like this happens? All these details seem so precise and definite: the hall full of nobles, the finger-pointing, the yell "So-and-so! Our engagement is cancelled!" and so on and so forth. Is it a trope that you expect to find in every otome game? Or is it a parody of one particular famous work? Or a combination of both?

Well, obviously not every Otome game is set in a western medieval fantasy setting but, when they are, that scene is a simple and easy way to either deliver a satisfying "victory" moment against the villainess or to set up what an unreasonable person the prince is. Closely following a formula is not as frowned upon in Japan and these cliches are often an expected part of the experience

would you kindly share the other ones? i love this trope since Flower Flower

"The Magical Revolution of the Reincarnated Princess and the Genius Young Lady" is the most popular recent example, having recently received an anime adaptation. It's the story of a princess with no magic powers who becomes a magitek engineer and takes her terrible brother's ex-fiance, who he publicly rejected, as her research assistant. The yuri follows from there

Another popular one with an anime adaptation would be "I'm the Villainess, So I'm Taming the Final Boss," which is not a yuri but does start with the villainess getting publicly rejected by the prince and then starting a romance with the Demon Lord instead

“ロマンスじゃない愛情”

I'm also not fluent in Japanese by any stretch, but this basically says "love that is not romance." So, platonic love I guess. Also, there's a different Japanese word for romantic love specifically (恋, "koi"), which isn't what's used here. I haven't read the interview in question though so I have no idea what the context was. Just clearing up the Japanese lmao

It means something more like "Affection without romance" or "unromantic affection"

In Japanese, "romance" is often used in the sense of having emotionally charged and unrealistically optimistic ideals about something

Therefore this phrase could mean that the affection is grounded and realistic, though I haven't read the interview and can't say for sure

I like how they're both kinda screwups. How could you not realize that girls wanna F@ck?

She was aware, she just said she hadn't considered feeding on it because Succubi have always targeted men in the past and there was no real need to think about other options

I get the impression that Kanna probably tried to convince Joe to go with her to LA

I hope she's not just trying to make Mitsuki move to America as some sort of ex-lover's revenge, though that might be an intersting arc

Falling in love with a straight girl who wants kids.

She's doomed.

From what she said, it's hard to say if she wants kids, though. It kind of sounds like she just thinks she is falling behind in her social group

@Yuri Yuriyuri
I found the speed of their relationship jarring until I looked online and discovered that these characters were originally a ship from Honkai Impact lol

Then it all made sense

i guess I’m the only one that wants some romance progression? the slice of life is starting to get boring -_-

You are aware that this is not yuri and will never be... right?
Sometimes when I read the comments I wonder how many of the readers have forgotten that the mangaka specifically warned us about that.

I didn't even know.
Then the tags here should be changed to subtext instead of yuri & romance

It was vaguely worded. The author said in an interview that she didn't consider it a yuri. Others have taken it to mean that she just thinks of it as a realistic romance story that should be relatable to anyone and is not meant to be a "gurl on gurl hawt" story

Now I really wonder if there are circumstances that led to her living with the uncle rather than her parents.

It's not so uncommon in Japan. With many kids having to commute to larger cities for school, they often end up moving in with relatives who already live there.

I do get the vibe that something may have happened to her parents from this story, though
